Colorado and Washington Lawmakers to Vote on Renaming 2014 Super Bowl

Colorado and Washington Lawmakers to Vote on Renaming 2014 Super Bowl

Denver/Olympia — A coalition of Colorado and Washington state lawmakers has introduced a collective bill – SB 420, Sporting Events Renaming Act – which authorizes renaming of the 2014 Super Bowl to the Stoner Bowl. Both states legalized marijuana in 2012. With the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks set to faceoff in this year’s NFL championship game, state lawmakers see this as an opportunity to promote marijuana tourism. The bill, applicable only to Colorado and Washington, mandates that the name “Stoner Bowl” be used by all privately owned in-state broadcast and print media. State and local tourism offices and state-owned media are also included in the mandate.

While Weed Bowl, Reefer Bowl, Bong Bowl and Munchy Bowl rounded out the list of possible name changes, lawmakers say they chose Stoner Bowl because it better symbolizes the effect marijuana has upon a user’s physical and mental attitude: to be relaxed like a stone.

Colorado House member, Rep. Beau Gartman (D – Boulder), highlighted the need for lawmakers to increase the flow of tourist dollars, and taxes, into their respective state economies.

“Although temporary,” Rep. Gartman said, “this bill is an excellent way to jumpstart a new tax stream until the marijuana-themed amusement parks now in the planning stages become reality.”

Washington and Colorado lawmakers will vote this Wednesday on SB 420. The bill is expected to pass with little opposition and should be signed into law by week’s end.

Kickoff between Denver and Seattle is scheduled for February 2, 2014, 6:45 p.m. ET, at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.
