It was on the UN sanctions list and bombed by Nato in the 1990s Balkan wars, but Serbia on Tuesday (21 January) officially started EU membership talks at a ceremony in Brussels.
It will take several years of talks before it can join.
But the Serbian Prime Minister, Ivica Dacic, who flew in to the EU capital, described the event as the "most important moment for Serbia since the end of World War II.
He said his country is now seen for what it wants to be - an EU member state - instead of people focusing on its role in past conflicts.

Several of the former Yugoslav republics have already joined the EU. Given the role of Slobodan Milosovic and the state of Serbia's government 20 years ago, joining the EU would be quite an accomplishment.

(24,692 posts)By 'Serbia coming a long way since the 1990's' I was referring to the type of government and society Serbians lived in. They have come a long way from that.

(10,303 posts)I think that would have to be resolved in the talks process. IMO Serbia would need to let Kosovo go... but at the same time have Kosovo join the EU at the same time.
