The White House is making a major push to convince Congress to give the president trade promotion authority (TPA), which would make it easier for President Obama to negotiate pacts with other countries.
A flurry of meetings has taken place in recent days since legislation was introduced to give the president the authority, with U.S. Trade Representative Mike Froman meeting with approximately 70 lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate.

Some Democrats might see a disconnect between the White Houses push for trade and its separate push on income inequality, which has been embraced by the party.
Senior congressional aides expect trade to be a part of Obamas upcoming State of the Union address, since the White House has made clear that the trade bill is a priority and the TPP trade pact is a core part of the administrations overall jobs agenda, in terms of increasing exports and opening markets.
This is a priority of the president's, White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters last week. It's part of a broad approach to expanding exports and, you know, creating more opportunities for our businesses to grow. And we're going to continue to push for it.

(653 posts)From The Nation, dated March 3, 2011:
The White House mostly has sought to stay out of the fray in Madison, Wis., and other state capitals where Republican governors are battling public employee unions and Democratic lawmakers over collective bargaining rights. When West Wing officials discovered that the Democratic National Committee had mobilized Mr. Obamas national network to support the protests, they angrily reined in the staff at the party headquarters.
Administration officials said they saw such events beyond Washington as distractions from the optimistic win the future message Mr. Obama introduced with his State of the Union Address.
In other words, the White House would prefer to endlessly repeat a lame slogan rather than get involved in one of the most consequential political fights of the present day. It seems like the new White House team, the subject of the Times article, isnt much different from the old; still more than willing to throw grassroots Obama supporters under the bus.

(32,324 posts)There is the one that will put on a pair of comfy shoes and walk the picket line, smoke a joint, (or fire up the vaporizer) and then end NAFTA, and then there is the other Obama.
One is always around for speeches and photo shoots, and the other is in the WH basement, helping the military figure out which drone strikes are our best bet. Gotta spread that democracy, don't cha know!

(517 posts)its a disaster to the last of the middle class and an absolute soul crusher to the working poor and those in poverty. It will cede legal authority to the multi national corporations. They will be able to sue whole countries for loss of "future expected profits". Its filled with all kinds of fascist fucking shit. Truly are screw job this TPP is and fucking shameful that Obama wants to fast track this garbage.

(52,162 posts)Yes I would like a citation of someone saying what you just said people clearly would say. I have seen that sited on only two issues (DADT and DOMA) where it was undeniably true. I have never, as in not one single, solitary time, seen anyone at anytime make such an argument in regards to NAFTA.

(7,759 posts)including fast-track. He is setting this up so that if the GOPer gets in, he or she won't have that authority either. If they fool around and give that authority to the President...just watch what he does with it.

We need to make these trade agreements more fair and the key to that is having more voices involved not fewer.
Then, we need to talk about tariffs.
