Apparently, destroying documents related to a disaster where 11 people died, and tourism and commerce were destroyed along with the local environment, doesn’t warrant jail time. Anthony Badalamenti, a cementing manager for Halliburton, pleaded guilty to one count of destroying evidence related to the Deepwater Horizon Disaster. His sentence was originally for one year in prison.

However, instead of one year in prison, U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey issued a sentence of a whole 100 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine. This is on top of a year of probation. “I still feel that you’re a very honorable man. I have no doubt that you’ve learned from this mistake,” were the judge’s words.

It’s easy to say that this particular offense isn’t really that big of a deal, especially when compared to what we know BP is guilty of in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. However, Halliburton used bad cement on the well. They ran tests on the cement for weeks prior to the explosion that showed it was unstable. BP also knew. They’re the ones who accused Halliburton of destroying that evidence.

But a federal judge ruled that BP had to let Halliburton off the hook for third-party claims regarding the pollution in the Gulf. This was even though the pollution was mostly Halliburton’s fault. Legally, BP is, and remains, almost entirely responsible for Deepwater Horizon disaster and its effects.
