Detroit is not the dystopian wasteland of Brooks Patterson’s nightmares

Newsflash: People from the suburbs can and do go into Detroit all the time without being attacked. Thats true even for people bold and daring enough to go into a chain pharmacy in the city or stop to buy gas before crossing the border into another town.
Anybody who thinks otherwise doesn't know Detroit.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson made a lot of people mad this week when he made some harsh comments about Detroit to The New Yorker magazine. Among his more colorful quotes was this bizarre gem:
I made a prediction a long time ago, and its come to pass. I said, What were gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and corn.
