http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/whatever-happened-to-the-good-old-canadian-winter/article2373210/... Canada is going through a heat wave unlike any other for this time of year. Spring hasnt officially arrived yet but on Sunday hundreds of heat records were registered at Environment Canada stations from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia as the weather neared June-like conditions, said senior climatologist David Phillips.
... Its truly a remarkable situation what were seeing. Its truly extraordinary in so many ways, he said.
The most sweltering temperatures were recorded in Northern Ontario, with Fort Frances reaching 26 C, for example, while Sault Ste. Marie enjoyed 24 C weather. Even in the Maritimes, temperatures between 17 and 20 C were well above the seasonal average.
In Winnipeg, the temperature hit 20 C on Friday, 19 C Saturday and was expected to reach 26 C Sunday, although clouds and a cool breeze kept it closer to 23 C. All three days smashed records and the normal high for this time of year is around 0 C. In fact, the city has set six temperature records in the past week and above-average temperatures are expected to continue for at least another week.

(50,130 posts)My grandparents homesteaded near there in the early 1900s. I would so love to find someone who lives nearby.

(20,582 posts)I don't have relatives there but if you're looking for genealogy help, there are SK volunteers listed online who may be able to help out.

(50,130 posts)I'll never get there, probably. Maybe some day I can find someone local to pick up a pebble and mail it to me. The homestead was at Ceylon SK, which may be a ghost town now. My grandfather built the bandstand there, and started the community band.

(3,687 posts)Usually, the parade takes place in freezing wind, amid six-foot snow banks. Today, it was t-shirts and shorts.
Next year, I'm gonna pipe-line some spf-45.

(8,646 posts)I have an uncle who farms there (south of Winnipeg) and he says he's never seen anything like it in 50 years he's been on the farm. It's unreal. They had very little snowfall this year too.
I'm further west and we've had a warm winter, but nothing like that.

another dry spring/summer coming and woe to the farmers. Last summer was the first in Years we felt we had to water our grass. We don't water for cosmetics, we water for keeping it alive.

Tomatoes need over 70 degree days and over 50 at night, to set fruit.
Our temps will be in the mid to hi 80's days and low 60's at night.
This is more typical of mid to late May than March here.
And a very mild winter.
