Why DU matters

"A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy; or, perhaps, both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."

-- James Madison, Letter to W. T. Barry, August 4, 1822.

FYI: James Madison with Thomas Jefferson helped found the movement that would become the Democratic Party. Ask yourself if you knew that before now.

And it shows how priorities have changed since Madison's time from "Knowledge for Liberty" to "Ignorance for Power 'n' Property":

Government Nanny Censoring "Conspiracy Theories" Is Also Responsible for Letting Bush Era Torture and Spying Conspiracies Go Unpunished

EXCERPT...

Prosecuting government officials risks a “cycle” of criminalizing public service, (Sunstein) argued, and Democrats should avoid replicating retributive efforts like the impeachment of President Clinton — or even the “slight appearance” of it.

“The heaviest restriction upon the freedom of public opinion is not the official censorship of a press, but the unofficial censorship by a press which exists not so much to express opinion as to manufacture it.”

Here's another name that more people should know: Alex Carey

Alex Carey: Corporations and Propaganda

The Attack on Democracy

The 20th century, said Carey, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. And, in his manuscript, unpublished during his life time, he described that history, going back to World War I and ending with the Reagan era. Carey covers the little known role of the US Chamber of Commerce in the McCarthy witch hunts of post WWII and shows how the continued campaign against "Big Government" plays an important role in bringing Reagan to power.

John Pilger called Carey "a second Orwell", Noam Chomsky dedicated his book, Manufacturing Consent, to him. And even though TUC Radio runs our documentary based on Carey's manuscript at least every two years and draws a huge response each time, Alex Carey is still unknown.

Given today's spotlight on corporations that may change. It is not only the Occupy movement that inspired me to present this program again at this time. By an amazing historic coincidence Bill Moyers and Charlie Cray of Greenpeace have just added the missing chapter to Carey's analysis. Carey's manuscript ends in 1988 when he committed suicide. Moyers and Cray begin with 1971 and bring the corporate propaganda project up to date.

This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

I pay attention to the real history of DoD and the intelligence community, some of their operations certainly pay attention to some of US that take an interest in such things-lol.

K&R + another sign of a coup well worth publicizing.

Politicians, legal experts and progressive activists grappled with Republican abuses of power at the third annual netroots convention on Friday, debating how an Obama Administration might restore the rule of law. Cass Sunstein, an adviser to Barack Obama from the University of Chicago Law School, cautioned against prosecuting criminal conduct from the current Administration. Prosecuting government officials risks a "cycle" of criminalizing public service, he argued, and Democrats should avoid replicating retributive efforts like the impeachment of President Clinton--or even the "slight appearance" of it. Update: Sunstein emailed to emphasize that he also said and believes that "egregious crimes should not be ignored."

Define "egregious"...Mr. Sunstein. Or ask someone like Don Siegelman.

The knowledgeable few with the resources are manipulating the ignorant to achieve their goals.

The problem is lifting the ignorant out of that state.

The information factor among republicans is worse. The false narratives allow for ignorance to reign supreme. The corporate shits like the Koch brothers who have set these false narratives have made people forget what they have learned in third grade science class and eight grade civics. Heritage foundation and all the other think tanks have gotten their money's worth on spreading stupidity. Tell me how in the hell do you learn about consumerism in civics class and then let talking heads tell you the 1% are the ultimate job creators???? Whats worse is this is what the 1% truly believe and want to be. How do you learn about molecules and the effects of cold and hot and not believe in climate change or man's contribution to Global warming?? Most of all how can you take a Grown man on Television playing with jars of urine and believe he has the answers???? http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/glenn-beck-dips-obama-pee-394932

The one thing I will say is that from where I sit stupidity wins in that party.

lots of news outlets now. but when the country is governed by two right-leaning parties, it is of little use.
