TN bill mandates publication of abortion data

Doctors who perform abortions in Tennessee could see their names listed online, and women who undergo the procedures could be unintentionally identified under a bill pending in the state legislature.

State lawmakers are debating a measure that would require the Department of Health to publish more details about abortions, bringing Tennessee into a roiling, state-by-state battle over how to regulate abortion procedures.

Supporters say the bill, scheduled to come up Wednesday in a state House committee, only requires state health officials to post information online that they already collect. But critics say the measure is intended to intimidate women and doctors involved in abortions, even in emergency situations.

“I think publicizing this information will do nothing but cause serious consequences,” said state Rep. Gary Odom, D-Nashville. “This is dangerous. This is a dangerous piece of legislation.”

And I "love" this justification: "Supporters say the bill, scheduled to come up Wednesday in a state House committee, only requires state health officials to post information online that they already collect."

Yes, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with publishing medical information online. Vile.

I live in Tennessee and I also work for a company that works in regulatory compliance. I know a lot of about HIPAA and I can't see these standing in the face of these compliance requirements.

The next thing the Repugs will require is the National Slut Registration.

Would you want one of these birth control using "sluts" living in your neighborhood? I would think not. Those sluts need to be exposed for what they really are, a threat to democracy itself.

That the same folks in favor of publishing these private medical records for a legal medical procedure have a huge commonality with the folks so dead set against publication of donor names to (for example) Proposition 8 in California?

I hope they at least have the decency to set up a fund to pay for the funerals of people killed as a result of this misguided legislation, but I know better than to hold my breath.
