Indonesian Islamic authorities unwittingly boosts ticket sales with Lady Gaga ban

Indonesia unwittingly boosts ticket sales with Gaga ban
March 19, 2012

High-ranking Indonesian Islamic authorities just don't understand kids these days. Cholil Ridwan, a chairman for the Indonesian Council of Ulema, has declared Lady Gaga's upcoming Jakarta concert as Haram, meaning it's forbidden to Muslims, which has helped make it the hottest show in town. 25,000 tickets to the Jakarta event sold in the first two hours of availability. Ridwan is urging fans to return the tickets and ask for a refund, despite having never seen the singer perform, claiming that the concert is "intended to destroy the nation's morality." However, if there's one way to make fans more interested, it's by calling something dangerous and forbidding them to see it. Maybe Gaga's agents should send Ridwan a thank-you note when the tour arrives there in June.

How utterly predictable. hifiguy Mar 2012 #1
It's only "predictable" in consumer culture - it certainly wasn't the human norm saras Mar 2012 #2
Popular culture such as music becomes the human norm which is why it's called popular. Better Believe It Mar 2012 #3

Anything forbidden instantly becomes much more attractive and interesting. What a dolt.

We buy Bruce Springstein and Lady Gaga music because we like it and it is good, not because clever media propaganda convinces us that their music is great and should be bought.

Right-wing propaganda and mass media marketing tried to convince us in the 50's and 60's that rock and roll was the music of the devil.

How did that work out?
