Porter calls Nathan Deals response unacceptable
First, our thoughts and prayers are with the men, women, and children who still havent made it home. I also want to commend Georgias first responders, teachers, and unexpected guardian angels who have demonstrated the strength of community in our state, said Chairman Porter.
While the Chairman lauded the extraordinary acts of Georgia citizens, he also addressed the anger expressed by many.
People are furious, and rightfully so. This is as big and bad a dumpster fire Ive seen. Deals lack of leadership to manage GDOTs resources and subsequent failure to competently respond to the aftermath of the storm is appalling.
Chairman Porter was alarmed by the conditions families were forced to endure due to the inept response of the Governors office.
The disaster that has ensued from two inches of snow is simply unacceptable. Children sleeping in schools, trapped in school buses and generally cold and without their families is not acceptable. Families, trapped on the interstates, trapped in their cars in freezing temperatures, is not acceptable.
Also unacceptable is the Governors response. He called the storm unexpected. There was nothing unexpected about this storm. The only thing in this situation that was unexpected is Nathan Deals attitude towards people stranded on our roads and in our schools. We all hoped he would be better than this. But he proved, once again, hes not.
The Chairman concluded by saying Plain and simpleGovernor Deal got caught with his britches down.

(42,239 posts)they may consider doing what Dayton OH does when they have a few feet or so - order all cars off the road when a few inches of snow are forecast in GA.

(21,024 posts)Atlanta's mayor on Morning Joe. It seemed unfair. It's hard to prepare adequately for something that happens so seldom.

(171,079 posts)I don't know who should have been responsible for a thorough contingency plan-seems like a gov job? Plus, I can't stand Deal.
Reminds me of a horrific evacuation from an approaching hurricane in Houston, Rita, same year and right after Katrina. There were people running out of gas on the highways because so many people were trying to get out of town-a complete gagglefuck.

(21,024 posts)people have a right to complain. But a blizzard in Atlanta is a once in a generation event. The folks who got out on the roads after it started might want examine whether that was a wise choice. We don't see around corners very well.

(9,462 posts)The issue wasn't on the streets in the city proper, it was on the state highway and interstate system which all falls under the jurisdiction of the governor. The schools not being called off falls on the superintendent's and they need to be held accountable (whoever they are).
