Sweeney: Hike minimum wage for PANYNJ workers in N.J. to mirror N.Y. proposal
TRENTON Whats good for the New York workers is good for the New Jersey workers
Senate President Steve Sweeney this morning called on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to increase the minimum wage for airport workers at Port facilities in New Jersey immediately.
The top N.Y. appointee to the bi-state agency, Patrick Foye, has proposed a $1 increase for that states workers at Port-run locations.
I commend New York officials for taking action to increase the minimum wage for airport employees of New York facilities operated by the Port Authority, an important move which will help to bring workers out of poverty and provide the economy with a much-needed boost. New Jersey officials at the authority must now follow suit, Sweeney said in a release.
Without identical action on the New Jersey side, employees who are performing the same job will essentially be defined as second-class workers. This is a matter of economic and basic fairness. I call on our New Jersey representatives and the Port Authority to take immediate action to raise the minimum wage at Port-run operations. Anything less than a direct, quick response would be a slap in the face to the men and women who work hard every day just to make ends meet.
