Put ban on civil unions back into HJR3, Indiana governor says

Gov. Mike Pence says he would like a second sentence prohibiting civil unions to be restored in the proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage so the issue can go to voters in November, a new report says.

The Indiana House removed the civil union ban this week before sending the controversial measure to the Senate for consideration. If the proposal is approved as altered, it would delay a voter referendum on the issue until at least 2016.

WISH-TV (Channel 8) said Pence made his comments in an interview, after declining to address the issue at a news conference earlier this week on a separate issue.
