The word "Democrat" is is not synonymous with "liberal" any more and hasn't been for a LONG time.

The rich call the shots in both parties, the Democrats just occasionally throw is a bone to get re-elected.

The food pantry here is running very low already. This is the most cold-hearted thing I have ever witnessed. I am just devastated that anyone could be this mean.

and utility bills. Sorry if your real purpose is as a right wing troll, but the truth is certain states have different proof requirements for utility bills used to offset income and qualify. Why do you think Elizabeth Warren voted for it? The right wing is pushing the cut to keep their rabid voters calmed down.

House Republicans originally wanted to cut food stamps by $40 billion over a decade, throwing almost 4 million people out of the program. As part of the compromise, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be barred from advertising the availability of benefits — a measure that Rep. Frank Thompson supported.

How do you like that, will be barred from advertising!

I also read it won't take effect for existing food stamp recipients until this summer and for some people next year. Don't know what the difference in the dates is based on.

no advertising? What the hell is wrong with these people? They don't want to tell poor hungry people that there is help for them? I hope EVERYONE who has a soul, vote the Tea-publican party out.

I applied for Food Stamps in November 2012.

I qualified for $169.00 per month in Food Stamps for 2 months.

In January of 2013 my Food Stamps were reduced to $140.00 for 2 months.

My Food Stamps were reduced in March 2013 to $109.00 per month.

As of January 1st, 2014 my Food Stamps have been reduced to $99.00 per month.

I would call that a huge cut.

disgraceful.

If the current Senate bill is passed by the house then people in 16 states may be affected by closing a loophole. This is an article in NPR from before the passage talking about what might happen, but I think it's the best explanation:

As I understand it corrects an oversight in previous legislation that allowed some to receive more than was intended, hence the D's acceptance. It is real losses of average $90 per family involved. Only 3 states are not affected that do not use LIHEAP info to calculate their standard utility deductions but only a small subset will see the cuts. I believe the states unaffected are SC, Ariz., and one other, Mississippi, maybe.

... will just have to buy a lot less porterhouse and king crab and caviar, then.

We all have to tighten our belts, you know.

Our "job creators" have taken their hits... the middle class has taken some big hits.... and now the hungry need to take their hits.

Food aid recipients have been rolling in the clover, but now they'll have to adjust.

If I need to add ... you are too fucking dumb to be on DU.
