(6,794 posts)I've contacted some of them, and I'm not I'm buying it. Of the ones I've contacted, they pretty much all say they don't use it and never have. Yeah, and I just fell off the turnip truck. [sarcasm]
I think it's gonna be pretty damned difficult to find out anything for sure.

(36,827 posts)I haven't bought ground beef at the store in many years. Buying pre-ground beef raises your chances of food poisoning (although still relatively low) because when the meat is ground, pathogens have much more surface area to grow and it exposes the interior of the meat to potential pathogens. I grind my own because it just takes a few minutes and it gives me complete control over all aspects of my ground beef like texture, which cut I use, and what fat content. A chuck roast contains 20% fat, which is what ground chuck contains. This is perfect for hamburgers. If I want leaner ground beef, I just trim some of the fat off before grinding.

And by the way, in my mind, Publix is the standard by which all grocery stores should be measured.

(18,531 posts)I have just contacted Trader Joe's. Will let you know when I receive a response.
I will be very concerned (and surprised) if they do sell this putrid crap. Hoping they don't.
Then again... I don't think kosher ground beef can be pink slime.

(18,531 posts)Dear __________:
Thank you so much for contacting us regarding this issue. We want to assure you that none of the ground beef items we carry contain the "pink slime" substance which has been so prominently featured in the news as of late. "Pink Slime" is found only in ground beef, and it is essentially a slurry of ground beef trimmings that have been treated with ammonia, used in ground beef to maintain its pink appearance. As you have probably learned, the USDA considers it a processing agent, so it does not need to be listed as an ingredient on packaging. All of that said, please know that Trader Joe's would NEVER allow the use of the pink slime compound in our ground beef products, as this practice is completely sub-standard and against what Trader Joe's stands for: transparency, trust, and quality.
Thank you for being a concerned customer, and thank you for shopping with us!
Best regards,
Rachel

(14,549 posts)It costs money to process beef like this and would be cheaper to simply run it through the grinder.
Consumers are increasingly naive about pathogens and safe food handling practices. Watch any YouTube video of an amateur showing you how to cook and you will be horrified. Heck watch Rachel Ray for 3 minutes. Many consumers want their ground beef to be fire engine red (as if the cow was slaughtered 10 minutes ago).
People make themselves sick by cross contaminating their entire kitchen (especially the faucet handles, towels and the refrigerator handles). Then they want to blame the grocery. They demand artificially colored and preserved beef at artificially low prices (subsidies) so it makes sense that they would also want artificial food safety.

(8 posts)They might not have it in their ground beef but i'd bet that all have it in pre-packaged products they sell (frozen meatballs, pizzas, burritos, etc).
