Mr. President, When Should I Expect Your Call?
Bristol Palin
You dont know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next. You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didnt want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:

(13 posts)She deserved to made the butt of jokes because of her mother? I was appalled then and I am appalled by this attitude now. She was an innocent victim in all this!
karynnj
(59,503 posts)pregnant, there were very few jokes that I saw. Before ANYONE on the left made a critical comment, Palin's team had already proactively had blasted them for daring to criticize a young girl who was doing the right thing by not having an abortion.
When there were jokes, it was years later, like Letterman's - that he apologized for - it was after she had the baby and there was the whole very public saga between her and the baby's father. I wish that the media had left her alone - completely. Including no DWTS, no star turns on a reality show of teen moms, no huge contract to speak of abstinence - just privacy so she could grow up. The fact is the right made her, like her mom, a star - and unlike her mom, who was a governor and VP nominee, she had done absolutely nothing that should have given her these things.
I don't see her as an innocent victim - she played for the publicity and made money off of it.

Hence the title.

(27,787 posts)See the difference??
The defacto leader of the GOP attacked a woman for daring to try and testify to congress.
Bill Maher is not the defacto leader of the Democratic party. Not even close.
It is not simply a "conservative" who attacked Fluke, but one of their leaders. And if you dispute that Rush is one of their leaders, you are not being serious ... the GOP presidential candidates are terrified of having to call him out for his three day attack, in which Rush LIED repeatedly about Fluke's testimony. That is how scared of Rush they are.
Interestingly, Fluke's testimony was not even about herself. And yet Rush and the GOP decided to make her the issue anyway in an obvious effort to silence her.
That has failed. And the right wing becomes more shrill about that fact almost daily.
Initech
(100,076 posts)Was Bill Maher ever made an honorary member of Congress? No. Until that happens people making this bullshit comparison can... well... I probably shouldn't complete this sentence.
RZM
(8,556 posts)And the actual political leaders of the GOP almost certainly resent his status, I feel no need to hold him to some imaginary standard set for leaders of political parties. I hold him to the same standard I would hold any political commentator, which is what he really is.
I agree what he did was wrong, but I don't expect him to behave as if he has some title that he doesn't actually posses. He's a shock jock and this is the kind of thing they do. If the candidates and party are afraid of him, so what? That's their problem.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)He claims to be the VOICE of the CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT.
Elected Republicans DARE not challenge him ... and when they have made that mistake, the IMMEDIATELY go on his show to apologize to him.
Now, maybe at some point, Bristol Palin will be asked to go to Congress and testify on some important question. If that happens, and some one important on the left attacks her for doing so, then maybe there is something to discuss here.
But that has not happened. Not even close.
And if the GOP is afraid of him, then that tells you all you need to know about them, does it not?
RZM
(8,556 posts)Just as the 'progressive movement' and the Democratic Party are not the same.
I'm not defending him or his statements here. I'm just saying that I'm not going to judge him as anything but an influential conservative commentator.
baldguy
(36,649 posts)There is no "conservative movement" without the Republican Party. They are one-in-the-same.
Republican officeholders literally tremble in fear for their political lives in hopes that they will never find themselves in opposition to Lord Rushbo - and when they do, they will literally (again) drop everything to prostrate themselves at his throne, kiss his ring & beg forgiveness. And that's just the way he likes it!
I doubt even half of Dems in a similar position even know who Bill Maher is. And half of thsoe who do would have no problem calling him an asshole to his face. And you know what? Bill Maher is OK with that. He really doesn't care!
That's the difference.

"You know who is really, really happy that John McCain did not win last night? The boyfriend of Sarah Palin's daughter. He doesn't have to get married now. 'Whew, thank God!'" --Jay Leno
"Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box." --Conan O'Brien
"You know, they're watching this interview, this is the first time she's really sat down and talked. Political experts say that during the interview, she did a pretty good job convincing voters that she's qualified. Yeah, Palin says she has plenty of experience, and that her daughter has a little too much experience." --Conan O'Brien
"Did you see Governor Sarah Palin on the cover of Newsweek? Look, she's holding a shotgun. Holding a shotgun. This picture was taken right after she announced that guy would be marrying her pregnant daughter." --Jay Leno
"Experts say -- this is interesting -- that since Sarah Palin became the vice presidential nominee, there's been an actual spike in the sales of her style of eyeglasses. Gone way up. Yeah. Yeah, with Palin's glasses, you'll be able to see everything, except what the hell your teenage daughter's up to." --Conan O'Brien
"The Republican Convention is under way. The theme for tonight's Republican Convention is, 'Who is John McCain?' Tomorrow night's theme is, 'Who forgot to check if the Vice President's daughter is pregnant?'" --Conan O'Brien
"It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" --Conan O'Brien
"Governor Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. Oh, boy, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before, now he's really done it!" --Jay Leno
And did she ever get an apology from these conservatives and republicans who appeared on Maher's show:

RockaFowler
(7,429 posts)Nothing hypocritical at all by the way. If we go after every comedian for what they say in a Stand-Up routine, what next?? What someone says to a family member about someone in the news?? Look Rush went over the line because he stalked and bullied Ms. Fluke. Bill Maher called Sarah Palin (not her daughter by the way) a "c" word in a stand up routine. Do I like it?? No. But he didn't say it on his show. He didn't say it on a radio broadcast free to anyone. He said it to a room of people who came to see him in a stand-up routine.
Letterman was making a joke about Bristol that he later back-tracked on. I find him crude and disgusting. I've never liked Letterman, so I'm glad he was pounded in the press for his comments. I guess you don't remember all of the people protesting him.

(7,048 posts)BSMP, her lobbying, public relations and political consulting firm is clearly the work of a shy little girl.
The $262,000 she got to front for the bogus Candies Foundation again shows her reluctance to be in the spotlight.
When she signed a book deal for an autobiography with William Morrow, she was forced into the spotlight by her mother!
Her appearances on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Dancing with the Stars, Sarah Palin's Alaska and Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp are more evidence of her reluctance to be seen in public.
Her $30,000 speaking fee, talk show appearances and political commentary cement the fact that
she just wants to be left alone.

(153,160 posts)MAHER: To compare that to Rush is ridiculous - he went after a civilian about very specific behavior, that was a lie, speaking for a party that has systematically gone after women's rights all year, on the public airwaves. I used a rude word about a public figure who gives as good as she gets, who's called people "terrorist" and "unAmerican." Sarah Barracuda. The First Amendment was specifically designed for citizens to insult politicians. Libel laws were written to protect law students speaking out on political issues from getting called whores by Oxycontin addicts.

You know I actually had some sympathy for her before she posted her whiny self-obsessed,petulant, narcisstic little rant -and I was declined to give her the benefit of the doubt since I generally give the children of politicians a free pass because I don't believe it's fair that children should be held accountable for the failings and misdeeds of the parents. And I don't particularly like Bill Maher either nor do I think he should have made those comments. But to compare herself to Sandra Fluke and try to portray herself as some maligned martyr -well that makes her so -I don't know -Sarah Palin-like. I guess the apple doesn't fall from the tree.
And why doesn't Bristol's mother do the classy thing and apologize to the Obama family for the thinly veiled racial inflammatory rhetoric she spewed against President Obama during the 2008 election campaign and in the subsequent years which, according to all reliable news reports, generated a great deal of threats of violence and death toward President Obama and her family.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,412 posts)no doubt that a lot of us liberals/progressives enjoy his anti-Republican rants but he is clearly a comedian and not even remotely considered a serious political leader for the Democrats the same way that Rush Limbaugh is for the Republicans. For instance, the Dems have NEVER made Bill Maher an "honorary member" of Congress like the Republicans did back in 1995. Dems don't regularly go on his show to grovel and beg his forgiveness if they deign to speak against him and/or vote in a way that he doesn't agree with. As for the Dems supposedly endorsing all of Maher's comments, including some of his "off-color" ones by way of accepting his Super Pac contributions, well, let's see the Republicans refuse to accept Super Pac contributions from people whom have said some of the same stuff (and worse) before they start calling us out on Maher. They are trying really hard to play the "false equivalency" and/or "victim" card because one of their main cheerleaders has royally screwed up and tarnished the GOP in the process- though it's not like they couldn't have just said that Limbaugh was wrong about this one thing and moved on. Their repudiation of Limbaugh and his disgusting comments was tepid at best and their attempts to try to splash Limbaugh's scandal all over the Dems by using occasional comedic off-color remarks from Maher suggests to me that they are really more interested in trying to contain the fallout from Limbaugh's comments more than repudiating them and making it known that the Republican Party does not endorse such views. Is Bristol, et. al suggesting that we have to start screening/censoring comedy acts if they seem at all sympathetic to Dems?
