I am starting to think it was a lot like this, except the income gap wasn't several football fields wide.

With at least some room for social mobility.

One upon a brief idylic time, America supported an ENTIRE (and continuous) SPECTRUM of people, from the abjectly poor, to the filthy rich.

Today, as in most of the non-idylic times, a great deal of effort is being expended to introduce inpenetrable barriers between the self selected worthy few, and everyone else.

We may fundamentally know about these issues but when they're laid out like this it looks so pathetic -- like we really haven't learned much or moved forward.

Thanks for spelling it out.

... could probably just recycle "Doonsbury" from the 70's for now, and not be out of step. Even some of the political figures are the same -- he was blasting Kerry 'way back then, for example.

In the 70s, there were people who wanted to "bring back the '50s." Nixon ran on and on about the "moral majority." Reagan was elected in reaction to the "permissiveness" of the 60's and 70's. Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose.

It's no question why so many Boomers are crazy. We're suffering from an extreme case of social whiplash.
