California man points gun at Girl Scout at his door to sell cookies

A California man was taken into custody over the weekend after he allegedly pulled a gun on a young Girl Scout who was selling cookies.

A press release from the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s office that the father of the girl, who is a minor, contacted authorities after he saw 59-year-old John Dodrill point the gun at his daughter while she was selling cookies door-to-door on Sunday.

“When the victim knocked on the suspect’s door, he opened the door and pointed a gun at her,” the release said.

...

The Girls Scouts organization has recently come under fire from conservative activists and pundits for linking to a story articles about liberal women, including Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D).

What kind of country have we become when Girl Scouts can't even walk door to door? They are going to have to do most all of their selling in front of grocery stores now. Think about it: a community where Girl Scouts can't sell cookies to their neighbors. Sorry for the rant.

Edit to add: Since GS have become such a target of the Right, I think I shall have to buy twice as many boxes this year.

The stand your ground laws need to go. Period. It is giving the people who want to act all macho and who own guns this false bravado. Everyone thinks they can be the tough guy now instead of being a reasonable human being.

The political team sport mentality that grips our country is to blame as well. It's all supposed to be black and white, my way or the highway, anyone who doesn't agree with you is the enemy. No subtlety, no nuance.

What a sad state our society is in.

A "samosa" is a delicious, savory, triangular, hot-pocket sort of thing from India. The GS cookie is called a "Samoa" and while also delicious, is not hot, savory, or from India (though you can put one in your pocket).

Both them and the BSA have recommended against door to door sales of anything and everything for the last several years.

Which is made worse by the fact that most parents can no longer bring such things to work because of issues there as well.

So the kids are relegated to trying to sell at Walmart entrances or other locations.

A sad turn of events in the past decade.

She was probably terrified out her little mind. This is so cold. When I was coming up the Brownies were the in thing. Selling cookies by the Girl Scouts is as Traditional as Apple Pie. We should be supporting the Girl scouts instead of pulling Guns on them. This ability for any old fuckface to get a weapon has to stop. One day it may be one of theirs. Funny how ending up in the same boat teaches you how to row. Maybe Girl Scouts should work in teams and send out flyers to show the day and date when they are going to be in neighborhoods, and have Adult Chaperones. Maybe the flyer can have short order form. That way they only go to homes that want cookies. just a suggestion. I just wouldn't want another parent to go through what this parent went through or what this parent is going through http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/15/justice/michigan-woman-shot-charges/

this is one reason I am not letting my daughter go door to door asking for money for a school in Nepal that her school has decided is the kids' community service project this year. We don't live in a bad neighborhood, but it's not the greatest either and I see far too many "Nobama" or "You can keep the hope and change and I'll keep my guns." stickers around. And my daughter is adopted from China, so she doesn't look like the people around us, which would make things possibly worse.
