CNN poll on SOTU: 44 percent "generally positive," 38 percent "negative"

CNN/ORC Poll: Majority say Obama's policies will fail

<...>

According to the survey, which was released Monday, 45% of the public gives Obama a thumbs-up on the job he's doing as President... up from 41% in November and December, when the President was at or near all-time lows in polls from CNN and other organizations. The President's disapproval rating now stands at 50%, down from 56% at the end of last year.

"Leaving aside partisan demographics, Obama gets his biggest support from people who live in big cities, who give him a 56% approval rating," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Three groups tie for the lowest rating for Obama in the current poll - rural Americans, senior citizens, and whites. The President scores only a 36% rating among each of those groups."

The President's 45% approval rating is consistent with several other national polls released just before last week's State of the Union address.

The speech might have been a mild net plus for Obama, with 44% of all Americans saying they had a generally positive view of the speech, compared to 38% with a negative view. But 16% had no opinion of the State of the Union and over half of all Americans didn't see the speech at all.

According to the poll, 58% say they hope Obama's policies will succeed.

As you may know, President Obama gave his State of the Union address last Tuesday night. About
how much of President Obama’s speech did you happen to hear or watch -- all of the speech, some
of it, only a little, or none at all?

Jan. 31-Feb. 2
2014

All of the speech 16%
Some of it 17%
Only a little 14%
None at all 52%
No opinion *

My guess is that half of those who said "a little", "some", or "all" were actually too ashamed to admit that they were "nones".

...no one probably saw it, that is except the few people on DU who watched it, including the critics.

A poll about Obama's speech that doesn't randomly select from the set of people who watched the speech isn't telling us much about Obama's speech. It might be telling us things about something else.

your poll reflected how the public ingested and regurgitated media (dis)information about Obama's speech.

"your poll reflected how the public ingested and regurgitated media (dis)information about Obama's speech. "

The poll is a snap poll of people who watched the speech.

it is very hard to research a picture. If it was a well constructed random sample of the set of people who watched the speech, it is interesting. If it isn't, it isn't.

and generally I think a very nice man. I am very proud to have him as our president. I love his wife and I think he has adorable children.
