Every police officer should be required to wear a body camera.

That cannot be shut off or have its contents deleted except while being serviced or turned in to have the files archived.

Each specific recording should be available to the public upon request.

I cannot think of a better way of destroying the blue wall of silence.

That jury was an aberration. I can't possibly believe that would happen every time. Or even most of the time.

I think people are afraid to publicly stand up to the police.

For fear of what the they are capable of. A person who speaks out to loudly against police abuse, or who works to prosecute murdering cops, puts themselves in a very perilous situation.

It's a pretty grave situation. I think a few exemplary prosecutions and better hiring practices would help.

Why not make every child wear one, so that we can fairly assess teachers for poor teaching, peers for bullying or drug use, playground hanger-outers for possible abusers, their parents for poor parenting skills...

Badges, clubs, pepper spray, police cars, bullet proof vests, Battering rams, stun grenades, Tasers, MRAPs, jails, shields, motorcycles and all of the police powers in the world that allows cops to stop, detain, search, ticket, arrest, beat or shoot us, I'll be all for giving cameras to kids for your stated purpose.

But otherwise, no.

like dash cams there will still be issues with low light and darkness, weather and tech issues, also having worn a body cam i can state that they dont always point in the right direction, you also get stuff in frame whether its a jacket or other piece of equipment or just ice or dirt. i am not against them altogether but they are a pain in the ass especially if needing to be activated or if you have a remote download being out of range from the cruiser. also i high stress situations such as under fire all you are going to see is the dirt or the back of cover. not sure how they would overcome the tech issues.

I work in a call center. Every second of every one of my calls inbound or outbound is recorded and archived.

I see no reason why police officers shouldn't be held, at a minimum, to the same standard that we maintain for call center workers.

reasons...

obviously, for the protection of civilians coming into contact with the police, but also for the protection of the police themselves.

I saw an episode of "Cops" the other night where, taken out of context and pieced together in all the right spots, would have made the cop/cops involved look very bad.

Instead, the camera captured the entire interaction, and made it plain that the perpetrator/suspect was being given multiple chances to calm down and act like a decent human being before being tased.

The cop who pulled the guy over exercised way more self control and restraint than I might have under similar circumstances.
