Obama nominates second gay black judge to federal bench
After his first attempt to nominate an out African-American judge to the federal bench was blocked by Sen. Marco Rubio, President Barack Obama announced Wednesday his intent to try again. According to a release from the White House, Obama will nominate Darrin Gayles to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Gayles, who has served as a circuit court judge for Floridas 11th Judicial Circuit since 2011 and previously served as a county judge for the same circuit from 2004 to 2011, was endorsed by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund for his bid for re-election in 2012. If confirmed, Gayles, much like Thomas before him, would become the first out black man in the nations history to serve on the federal bench.

So I ask again where does that figure into the equation with Senator Warren?
Is this going to be like pulling teeth where I have to try to pry the information out of you?
One thing I am looking at is I have been low man on the totem pole for far to long and yes that has figured into my equation.

I'm a woman and I don't want Hilary as our president just to have a female president since she's way too corporate.

(83,791 posts)That was poignant.
I met my first gay couple when I was about five. My parents introduced me. The owner of a restaurant and one of his waiters. They were always invited to our cottage in Truro . Sure I was young at the time, what the hell did I know? Yet it was acceptance, my parents knew. It made no difference, not then or now. Guess what that was a million years ago William. I am 61 years old. Accceptance by some then...yet we have to fight the battles all over again.
My dad was born in Provincetown. I spent a good portion of my summers there. I know. I really do.
You William are such a sweetheart.

Well, okay, maybe it IS. Let me rephrase.
Tokenism is not liberalism, Sheshe.
Like you, I don't claim to know these nominees. Fair enough, we're both in the dark. But you seem to have it in your head that their racial, gender, or sexual identities are "good enough." Who needs to know anything more, apparently?
That one has a lot of melanin, that one doesn't have a dick, that one is living with someone who's the same sex, so OF COURSE their opinions, positions, and achievements don't actually matter - you're not after results, you're just trying to fill cast slots on a Saturday night sitcom.
But yaaaaay.

The women folk, poor lost souls that they are. They can't seem to see the forest for the trees unless the old shriveled menz of the GOP tell what to do. Sigh, sad that we lost our collective minds and that we must wait for their sage advice.
Love ya William!

More on Judge Darrin Gayles from your link..
"Gayles served as an assistant district counsel at the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1997 to 1998 and as an assistant state attorney in the Miami-Dade State Attorneys Office from 1993 to 1997. He is a graduate of George Washington University Law School and Howard University.
According to Victory Fund press secretary Steven Thai, Gayles is a "qualified jurist who will also add diversity to the federal bench" and, if confirmed, "will reflect the talent and commitment that exists in communities that are underrepresented in public service."

(57,936 posts)Elizabeth Warren is a lawyer and understands the importance of having a lawyers that represent different legal experiences on the bench. It is important to have some criminal defense attorneys as well as some former prosecutors, some lawyers who have defended corporations as well as some who have represented plaintiffs in lawsuits. In law it is not just a matter of having racial, gender, etc. diversity. You need to have diversity in terms of the legal experience of the lawyers appointed to the judiciary. That is how you get fairness for all who appear and are tried or bring claims tot he court. (Think Clarence Thomas.)
In fact, a judge of one race who has primarily represented the interests of people of another race in his practice as a lawyer may bring great balance and fairness to his judgments of people of all races. A lawyer's job is to represent his client, not to indulge in his own prejudices. Judges with a more balanced experience during their years practicing law will, hopefully, be more balanced in their approach to the cases that are tried before them.
In truth, a lot of judges are appointed for political reasons, because they belong to the right crowd or the right political party and not because they are really suited for the judiciary. And that is detrimental to all of us.
Has Obama appointed any ACLU lawyers? How many lawyers who have worked for public interest firms has he appointed? I do not know. Does anyone?
