I really hate NBC's Olympic Coverage . . .

They edit the events to show us what they think we want to see.

They show the top 3 or 4 competitors plus an American competitor
per event, regardless if they're competitive.

They have too many up closer and personal BS.

Bob Costas tries to be too philosophical.

And they have too many damn commercials.

Unfortunately, because NBC paid so much for the rights, they
control what we're see, and 95% in NOT live.

Only MSNBC has live hockey coverage at 5am or 7am on weekends.

Otherwise it's chopped up edited garbage.

In these Olympics, our cable company has like 10 'on demand' CBC feeds (I'm in Canada)...I've already started watching the qualifying rounds. I can choose pretty much any sport. No commercials. Not much announcing either.

Almost like EuroSport.
Wait ... it's exactly like EuroSport.

That will never happen in the US as long as NBC controls the rights.

..various cable tv providers have an arrangement with NBC for their subscribers to watch live video of the events online for free. You can pretty much watch all of the events, except the Opening Ceremony, live.

http://stream.nbcolympics.com/live-extra/

I watched a lot of the 2012 Games in London that way; it worked very well. At least in that instance, the commentary during the events was pretty limited.

The Sochi - US Eastern time difference is 9 hours; that does affect what they can show live on television.

I hate the closeups on athletes before they compete. They are only interesting after they come up as attention worthy due to performance. Nadia was like this. We were curious about her because she got our attention.

And the ones they pick had some tragedy in their lives. Always the same story there.

I don't know why I am defending NBC but I am.

1. They MUST edit events because there are so many how would they broadcast them all? I mean they have to edit the events or it would be 200 hours of programming for every 24 hours in a day due to so many multiple events.

2. I imagine they have researched and tested which events garner more attention and ratings. Of course they are going to show those events. There's a reason baseball, football and basketball get more coverage than Polo or Lacrosse.

3. I don't see anything wrong with showing an American or two. Come on...we all want to see the American perform. I follow a lot of the athletes from the US in various manners and I like seeing their performances.

4. I agree about the up close stuff. That doesn't do anything for me but again, I bet they have researched it and there's an audience for it.

5. I cant stand Bob Costas. He's an ass.

6. Any network will have too many commercials. But please tell me about a program that doesn't. The rights fees to carry the Olympics is HUGE plus they need to make a profit. So of course they will air lots of commercials. I DVR the games and watch the next day. No commercials.

They edit the competition out of sequence to create drama.

Plus when they edit they don't show all the competitors. It's like watching
a baseball game and only showing you the innings when they score runs
and then showing you the innings out of sequence to make it appear that
there is pressure and tension where it doesn't exist.

I saw this when I was able to watch the Lillehammer games live on Eurosport.
They showed the women's figure skating final, all 24 competitors live!

When NBC showed it, they only showed the top 6 skaters out of sequence!!!
To create that drama.

So excuse me if I get on NBC, it's well deserved criticism.

If you absolutely must watch, I think the BBC has some live feed. I'll miss watching some of the events, but I can't in good conscience add to the viewership.

since (per msnbc guy the ceremony started at 20:14 local time/11:14am EST) the Russians get to show off their history and culture is there anyway to see all of that ? I am curious to see what events they show. Or should I wait for youtube? After I posted this, I went checked google again, that led me to SB Nation who posted the only way to see the opening is to wait for NBC. I couldn't find a live stream.
