Actor Kirk Cameron said on Tuesday that he can sympathize with the LGBT people who he has called unnatural and destructive because he has been bullied too.
In an interview with CNNs Piers Morgan earlier this month, Cameron asserted that his Christian faith taught him that homosexuality was destructive to so many foundations of civilization.
I love all people, Cameron insisted. I hate no one. And when you take a subject and you reduce it to something like a four second sound bite and a check mark on a ballot, I think thats inappropriate and insensitive.
Nobody should mistreat anybody, Cameron replied. Homosexuals should not be mistreated. Heterosexuals should not be mistreated. Bisexuals should not be mistreated.

Recently, he emerged from obscurity when he caused some controversy over a comment that he made, on Piers Morgan's show, about how homosexuality is "unnatural...detrimental and destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization." While *gay groups and many in the Hollywood community objected, he was defended by the homophobic hate groups, "The American Family Association" and "Americans for Truth About Homosexuality." Cameron claims that his free speech is being infringed upon. So it's not surprising that Fox & Friends, a show that specializes in persecuted Christians, offered him an opportunity to defend himself as well as promote his movie.

Someone show me where his free speech rights are being violated. The fact that people find his views and comments disgusting and hateful and are voicing their objects simply means that they are exercising their right to speech, not infringing on Cameron's. Or does Cameron feel that his speech is somehow special (because he's a God-fearing Christian, perhaps) and above criticism.

(9,933 posts)to complain that when they say something inflammatory or bigoted that their free speech rights are being violated. My parents were going to visit a few months ago and they have been known to say some pretty inflammatory stuff and love to pick political fights with my hubby and I. In an effort to make sure the visit was pleasant and non combative I asked them to not bring up politics or religion. Especially in front of the kids. My dad agreed but my mom flipped out and accused me of violating her free speech rights and cancelled the trip. Then she threatened to call CPS and claim I was keeping my kids from seeing her. She's a such a sweet old freeper.
Anyway, Kirk Cameron is a fool. That he would insult and deride people and then claim he was being bullied for his hateful bigoted comments is insane.

(82,849 posts)When someone gives you static for spouting hateful, uninformed bigotry, that can be hurtful. Yeah. It's tough to take. But when you use a national cable platform to question another group's very existence, and that group has been subject to murder (not mere mistreatment) for no other offense than seeking to live peaceably with all, it's different. If you can't see the difference, there may be little hope that your words about being "mistreated" are anything other than just words.

(27,677 posts)People using their free speech to counter your hate speech is mistreatment? What kind of Bizarro Universe do you live in? Seriously, what color is the sky in your world?
BTW, this is what mistreatment looks like, Kirk, but I don't expect you to 'get it.'
