Russia Can't Get Through the Opening Ceremony Without Screwing Up

It took less than ten minutes of the 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony to witness the latest in a long line of Sochi screwups. The final ring in the sequence failed open out from a snowflake, giving us this sad abortion of an Olympic symbol. Here's video:

The Russians put their eggs in the basket of a Stupid American. How dumb was THAT?

The entire world is empathizing with the Russians today... and the opinions of Stupid Americans are doing nothing more than making this country look bad. I read it in this thread.

If I were Putin, and a Stupid American made me look bad like that... the missiles would already be on their way.

Hence the ridiculous posts all over DU that equate modern Russia with the former USSR and communism. Lack of first hand knowledge is your problem. Russia is quite amazing if you take the time to find out instead of getting all your info from US "news" sources, because we all know our own media would never lie to you. Oh the irony! Russia may still have some corruption problems but compared to the US they are definitely on the upswing economically. I'm curious did you boycott living in the USA during the Iraq War? Or were you for killing Iraqi's?

There's always something in an Oly opening ceremony that goes wrong. No big deal. Honestly, I think everything will be fine and we'll see some great competition. I do think the IOC will probably be a little bit more attentive to actually designating host cities that are in, well, actual snowy places in the future, though.

Such animosity and cynicism...(and perfectionism?) Can we get into the true spirit of the games and not be projecting negativity? We owe it to the athletes.

Sure, it's embarrassing to the organizers I'm sure. But all the stupidity coming out of the US is just as embarassing. And are we perfect in all things?

There is plenty of news regarding the schadenfreude the US is projecting. It's making the US look foolish and backfiring in the international arena. People are empathizing with Russia, not the other way round. DU'ers seem to be missing that.

and I hate it. I think it deserves the strongest protests. Anywhere. Just be sure outrage is also directed here in America where this happens also. Yes, this is a lot more important than bitching about unfinished hotel rooms, but it is a world-wide problem. Don't get me wrong--bringing it up now in this context is appropriate. But hating on a whole country is stupid and narrow-minded. We haven't cured ourselves enough to be able to trash entire foreign countries. It's lame.

An abortion? Really?

It's a really good thing that everything you have ever done, ever, has never gone wrong. Ever! Because that's what's important. Because only a perfect human, free from all faults, quirks and mistakes stands to judge the failures of others. Good job on keeping the imperfect in their place.

I thought my laptop was clean still but yesterday I noticed there were ads everywhere on every website I visited. I ran malwarebytes and it found 240 infected files. I cleaned those out and still ads everywhere. Finally I found an hdplayer add-on in firefox timestamped as installed when I had first gone to the site, removed that and things are back to normal. Be very careful on there.

44. My synopsis:
Fri Feb 7, 2014, 04:33 PM
Feb 2014

The symbolism throughout the entire show was most likely lost on most westerners, from the Troyka horses, to the fish that swims through the broken ice, to the arrival of the cathedrals, to the girl leading the way, to the use of TATU as the music for the arrival of the Russian team. This was a show for intellectuals who understand history and culture. Even the Guardian missed the point on what the swinging 60's were like in Russia and compares everything to the London ceremony. Any old reason to jab at Mother Russia. The fact that the Russian producers barely touched on WW2 and Russia's role (the loss of 28 million souls) and instead poked a finger at themselves in a self deprecating way with a huge red scare performance shows the brilliance of this show. It was without a doubt absolutely.....fucking ........phenomenal!

Ironically, in Russia it aired on all TV stations. Not just one with exclusive right as in the US. Every station gets Olympic coverage in Russia and they play all the sports so everything is covered. I watched it in parallel on Russian and Canadian TV live channels today. The contrast was astounding. The Russian coverage was emotionally uplifting, energizing, very positive about all participating teams and people who work there. The Canadian network told how many empty seats there were, what problem some participating teams (Ukraine, Poland, Baltics etc.) have with Russia. Even Greece got a dose of the negative. Propaganda is alive and well and it's in the west these days. Hopefully MSNBC won't butcher the Olympics but I have a feeling they'll politicize the shit out of it for our good citizens. As Pink Floyd sung "Welcome to the machine."
