American Civil Liberties Union defends KKK in court

A Missouri city is being sued by the Ku Klux Klan for the right to distribute racist literature by placing handbills onto the windshields of parked vehicles. And guess who is representing the white supremacists in court?

The American Civil Liberties Union – one of the oldest human right defending organizations in the US – has come to the aid of one of the oldest and most notorious American racist groups.

Aclu Fights Town's Law Barring Klan March

Saying it was defending the principle of free speech, the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania filed suit in federal court yesterday challenging a Parkside Borough ordinance that is blocking an intended march by the Ku Klux Klan.

U.S. District Judge Robert F. Kelly scheduled a hearing for 2 p.m. today on the Parkside ordinance, which was enacted May 7. The borough has cited the law, which bars any parade that would require a "great number of police officers," to refuse a permit to the Klan.

"If they can deprive the Klan of the right to march today, then they can do the same thing for a rally for Jesse Jackson tomorrow," said Stefan Presser, legal director for the ACLU of Pennsylvania. "If the Klan can't march, then none of us can."

ACLU Defends KKK Free Speech: Right or Wrong?

The American Civil Liberties Union announced recently that it would defend the free speech rights of the notoriously racist Ku Klux Klan. Specifically, the ACLU will defend the right of the KKK to "adopt" a section of public highway (i.e. agree to have its volunteers clean up trash on the road) in return for public signage giving the KKK credit for a public service, in a state program that encourages civic groups to adopt highways this way.

But in retrospect their pimping of the Citizen's United case was one of the biggest WTF moments in recent memory....

Aside from that, they've always been on the side of truth and justice...

4. I know. This is in response to the most current attempt at a Greenwald smear.

Fact is you need to look beneath the surface and at the substance of anything to see what it's really about. There's several people on here who can't do that. Who don't understand complexities. Or maybe they do but they throw that aside in their attempt to swiftboat someone who dares criticize their idol.

6. Oh don't worry your pretty little head about it. You can just pick one person and believe everything

they say and do. Then all you have to do is try to discredit anyone who says anything against that one person. Simplifies everything.

And it's the ACLU that should be faulted for defending the KKK, not the people that are rightfully upset about it.

In a perfect world, we'd stomp all over the KKK with impunity and no one would rush to their defense.

13. How to stop the KKK

I think that stopping the KKK is a great idea. I've participated in a couple of anti-KKK rallies, including one in Austin Texas where we outnumbered the KKK and their Nazi allies by about 5,000 to 15. That's the way to shut them up and have them scurrying back to their rat holes.

But don't confuse the righteous anger of the people against the KKK with governmental prohibition of their activities. We have seen so many examples over the years that a law passed to stop the activities of a group we don't like is then used to attack progressive movements.

So, I agree with the ACLU's actions to ensure that activities protected by the 1rst Amendment are not restricted by the government. And I'd be delighted to work with you to stop the KKK wherever they appear.

10. Freedom of speech means you get to say things that some others might find offensive

There are plenty of people that would find the postings DU offensive, but Freedom of Speech means we have the right to do it anyway. Having to put up with the KKK is a small price to pay for that.

The ACLU is 100% correct defending the KKK's rights. I just wish they were as agressive about defending some of our other civil rights, like RKBA.

12. Yep. And just because they defend people who's views we may find reprehensible

doesn't mean the ACLU is a bad organization. Quite the contrary.

Shows why "shooting the messenger" is such a stupid and dangerous thing to do.

I disagree with RKBA though, had to look it up to know what that stood for, and wanted to add that I don't agree with that part. Don't want to discuss it here, plenty of threads for that on DU, just wanted to clarify my "yep" in my reply title.
