Silicon Valley's 'bro culture' locks out many minorities

The Silicon Valley touts itself as a meritocracy where people climb the economic ladder based on the power of their ideas. But many people of color can't even find that ladder, let alone climb it.

They're not part of the valley's white-male-dominated "bro culture," advocates say, and aren't connected to the social and educational networks where companies recruit talent.

"Shame on Silicon Valley, but shame on the rest of us, too," said Van Jones, a former veteran Bay Area activist and current co-host of CNN's "Crossfire."

His Oakland nonprofit, Rebuild the Dream, is one of the driving forces behind Start-Up Weekend Oakland, which begins Friday at the Impact Hub Oakland. More than 300 participants are expected to take part in a hackathon with an overriding theme of driving more African Americans and Latinos into the tech world's recruitment pipeline.

9% of the college majors who are math or computer science majors are minorities yet 13% are in the workforce. If you ask me that is pretty good.

Secondly, the sales force is white( I am in the sales force) and I am about the only Asian in the sales force. I have remarked about that many times. Here is why, In sales you are totally naked. There is nothing but your face. Minorities and worried that their color will be used against them so they do not go into sales. How do I know that. I have 3 brothers who went the technical route. I was the only one who went the sales route. I was the only one out of 18 cousins who didn't go technical yet I was pretty good at math.
