Duck Dynasty lose almost 50% of their viewers

That's so sad

When Duck Dynasty returned for their fourth season last year, their premiere episode was watched 11.77 million people. After Phil Robertson’s racist and homophobic remarks season five debuted to 8.5 million viewers. The second episode of the season dropped to 6.65 million viewers. The third episode stayed nearly even with episode two at 6.7 million viewers. By the fourth episode the show rebounded to 7.49 million viewers, but last night’s fifth episode dropped to new low of 6.51 million viewers.

While these are still really good numbers for a cable show, Duck Dynasty is no longer in the same league as AMC’s ratings phenom The Walking Dead. Phil Robertson’s racist and homophobic comments to GQ definitely pushed viewers away from the show. Beneath beards and duck calls, millions of Americans found an ugly intolerance for others that they refuse to support.

I knew several people who were more progressive or at least liberal on social issues and they'd tell me how much they loved the show Those are the people I suspect abandoned it after Phil's bigoted interview. It was ok to laugh with and at the assbackwards rubes as long as they kept their bigoted views to themselves. Once that cat was out of the bag, kind of hard to like them if that's not your views as well.

I just do not understand the proliferation of "reality" shows about swamp/bayou/woods-living people. You'd think that they were interesting, or a huge swath of the population, given their representation on some of these cable networks. I'm not interested in watching barely literate and sickeningly ignorant people wrestle with wildlife, or whatever seems to serve as a pastime. Call me an elitist, if you wish. I'll wear that tag proudly rather than watching even ten seconds of this drivel.

I really think that the right wing is trying to dumb down America with their crap TV. The History

a couple of years ago when they started going after this demographic/dynamic with gusto. The fact that these clowns (like the Honey Boo Boo clan) make upwards of $40K per episode when we have teachers who barely make $40K per year makes my blood pressure soar. Our priorities are so fucked up, I wonder if there's any genuine hope for civilized society to survive, and that's not hyperbole.

Hopefully with the fading of Duck Dynasty we'll see this craze go away or at least diminish.

It was novel and everyone was trying to jump on the bandwagon while it was hot. Eventually the saner parts of the population will tire of it. I think it's already happening.

Though there still is plenty of white trash teevee out there - Lizard Lick, Hard Core Pawn, Cops. I see these when flipping through channels, stop to watch and am amazed at the garbage and trash that is being made into tv programs.

Some of the shows are kind of like car wrecks. I honestly don't want to see the horrid results of a gruesome car wreck. I don't want see a dead body. But when I drive past a car wreck, I still look at it.

My TV example would be "The Surreal Life". That was a show where they put a bunch of has-been celebrities in a house, and had them live together for a while. I'm ashamed to say it, but if I was channel-surfing, and came across the show, I'd watch it. I felt dirty for doing it (that's why I never did it around witnesses), but I did. I've also watched episodes of 'Big Brother'....I didn't set out to watch them, but I watched them, even when I could have changed the channel.

I guess what I'm saying is: "Hi. My name is Captain Stern, and I've intentionally watched some shitty TV."

Like others that have already stated, I think what started turning people away was not the old man's anti-gay comments but more to do with the before pictures and then the marry a 15 year old girl comment.
