...requires multiple syllables to be used. Suggesting a higher IQ for the user. At least more agile lips. And it confers a certain respect upon the user since s/he took the trouble to go that extra mile. Whereas the word crap is just one syllable and clearly lower-class. Almost qualifying as a grunt. And anybody can be a piece o' crap. Take the Republican Party for instance.
