Robert Bales the staff sergeant accused of massacring Afghan civilians, enlisted in the U.S. Army at the same time he was trying to avoid answering allegations he defrauded an elderly Ohio couple of their life savings in a stock fraud, according to federal documents reviewed by ABC News.
"He robbed me of my life savings," Gary Liebschner of Carroll, Ohio told ABC News.
Financial regulators found that Bales "engaged in fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, churning, unauthorized trading and unsuitable investments," according to a report on Bales filed in 2003. Bales and his associates were ordered to pay Liebschner $1,274,000 in compensatory and punitive damages but have yet to do so, according to Liebschner.
"We didn't know where he was," Liebschner told ABC News. "We heard the Bahamas, and all kinds of places."

Makes you wonder about the psychological issues the Army is telling us he has...could just be a major asshole.

(37,540 posts)So weird...they couldn't find him in the Army? And a guy whose stashed $1.3MM signs up for 4 tours? This seems to be in conflict with the picture I got from seeing friends vouching for him. I wonder if they really knew him?

(1,827 posts)You're going to have to provide a citation for that one. All I've seen on that matter are Internet rumors, and press releases from his attorney that members of DU have been taking as absolute fact.

(3,508 posts)he Army staff sergeant accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers was arrested and prosecuted in 2002 for a fight while he was drunk at a Tacoma casino.
A police report released Tuesday by the Tacoma Police Department detailed an incident in which Robert Bales charged a security guard with a garbage can lid and slugged the guard in the chest with his fist.
He was wrestled to the ground and held until police arrived, according to the report.
The report said Bales was drinking in the bar of the Silver Dollar Casino about 1 a.m. on July 14, 2002, and had threatened another customer, who called security.
Two guards arrived and told Bales to leave the casino, according to the report. Bales left and got into a cab, but then got back out. The guards again told him to leave but Bales picked up a trash can lid and came at the guards, punching one of them in the chest.
