Poll: Thumbs down on Vladimir Putin, Russia

With all eyes on Sochi for the Winter Olympics, Americans hold the lowest view of Russia and its president that they’ve had in two decades, according to a new poll.

Sixty percent of Americans view Russia unfavorably, the most since 1994, according to Gallup’s poll out Thursday. Their favorable view of Russia nearly ties the low set in 1999 during the bombing in Chechnya and conflict in Kosovo: Today, just 34 percent of Americans view Russia favorably, near the 33 percent set in 1999.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also registered his lowest marks since first becoming president in 1999, per Gallup’s polling. Americans view Putin unfavorably 63 percent to 19 percent, continuing a trend that has grown since Gallup began polling on the Russian leader.

I worry about the mental health of anyone that has a favorable view of Putin or Russia.

While seeking equal rights for LGBT, a truly worthy cause, you use mental illness to represent the iconic negative stereotype for your adversary.

Americans aren't really all that far behind considering the U.S. is supposed to be the epitome of freedom and all that rot. Lots of room for improvement for everyone.

What's the World's Most Gay-Friendly Country? The Answer May Surprise You

Spain: 88, United States: 60. No, this isn’t the latest score from a fútbol match. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey (better warn the guys at Fox News), most Americans are becoming more tolerant of homosexuality in society, but the survey found that tolerance and support is highest in Europe and Latin American countries. The study was conducted in 39 countries and found stark geographical differences when participants were questioned about whether homosexuals should be accepted in society. Take a look at the map here:

That usually means 60% unacceptable in countries that actually DO do better in math that the u.s. So no, I will state again - for the supposed 'free'ist country in the world, you aren't that far behind Russia, considering.

We know that homophobia and racism and sexism flourish when economic times are hard. And Russia has had it pretty bad since the wall and the scraping of the economy (much by the west I should add) - so considering that too - the U.S., has had many many more years of time, and some of that good times, to finally start getting it right - but are still far behind many countries.

So if it were me, I'd be a little more careful about condemning the people of a whole country for being somewhere lower on the learning curve.

You can not simply move the US goal post back 10 years and not move Russia's as well. Making excused for discrimination for any reason contributes to the problem in my opinion.

I did not condemn any country for being lower on the learning curve, my remark about math was directed at you.

Edited to add:

http://www.nytimes.com/1995/07/08/world/gay-russians-are-free-now-but-still-stay-in-fearful-closet.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

In 1989, 31 percent of the Russian population said in polls that homosexuals ought to be executed, and 32 percent said they should be isolated. Only 12 percent said they ought to be left alone. While the figures are shifting, they still have along way to go: in 1994, 23 percent in a poll said homosexuals should be killed, 24 percent said they should be isolated, and 29 percent said they ought to be left alone.
