Question regarding Trayvon Martin's "disappearance."

I haven't heard or read what his family was doing to look for him before they were contacted about his death - two or three days later.

Had they been looking for him or reported him missing?

I keep hearing about his phone and how the authorities could have IDed him if they'd thought to look at the phone, but what were his parents doing? I know that if my kid didn't come home after a trip to the store, I'd be looking.

Not judging, btw. This is a tragedy and the police bungling in this case is beyond the pale. This is just a question I have that I haven't seen answered.

The link above has excellent (and sickening) info:

snip-

That was Feb. 27, one day after Trayvon was shot. The father thought that he was missing, according to the family’s lawyer, Benjamin Crump, but the boy’s body had actually been taken to the medical examiner’s office and listed as a John Doe.

The father called the Missing Persons Unit. No luck. Then he called 911. The police asked the father to describe the boy, after which they sent officers to the house where the father was staying. There they showed him a picture of the boy with blood coming out of his mouth.

-snip

I figured he had been reported missing, but I hadn't seen the full timeline on this.

Thanks for the link.

didn't even have the decency to perform a rudimentary 'clean-up' before snapping a 'trophy' photo.

I truly hope those responsible pay for the hell they heaped upon the hell these parents already are going through.

Charles Blow from the NYT wrote this editorial last week:

Bold face mine. Trayvon was initially labeled a Jon Doe -- it appears to me the assumption by the police department was that he had no reason to be in the neighborhood. From all that I have read, I have not read that the police went to people in the neighborhood to see if anyone had a missing child.

Trayvon Martin was killed on February 26. He was brought to the morgue. It was his father who was looking for him.

The cops labeled him a John Doe. He didn't have a wallet on him, no licence, student ID, credit/debit card? That 'police force' has a lot to answer for.

I was a fraud analyst for a cellular phone company....Cops check out cell phones immediately, They check out who owns it and who is being called. These cops are acting dishonestly..

I'm an old bat; cells are still something exotic.

Dishonest seems to be the kindest thing one can say about those cops.

This is the first that I learned of this part of the story. It was horrible, now it is even worse. This PD needs to be investigated for incompetence.
