I haven't heard or read what his family was doing to look for him before they were contacted about his death - two or three days later.
Had they been looking for him or reported him missing?
I keep hearing about his phone and how the authorities could have IDed him if they'd thought to look at the phone, but what were his parents doing? I know that if my kid didn't come home after a trip to the store, I'd be looking.
Not judging, btw. This is a tragedy and the police bungling in this case is beyond the pale. This is just a question I have that I haven't seen answered.

That was Feb. 27, one day after Trayvon was shot. The father thought that he was missing, according to the familys lawyer, Benjamin Crump, but the boys body had actually been taken to the medical examiners office and listed as a John Doe.
The father called the Missing Persons Unit. No luck. Then he called 911. The police asked the father to describe the boy, after which they sent officers to the house where the father was staying. There they showed him a picture of the boy with blood coming out of his mouth.

Thanks for the link.

Bold face mine. Trayvon was initially labeled a Jon Doe -- it appears to me the assumption by the police department was that he had no reason to be in the neighborhood. From all that I have read, I have not read that the police went to people in the neighborhood to see if anyone had a missing child.
Trayvon Martin was killed on February 26. He was brought to the morgue. It was his father who was looking for him.

(28,946 posts)The cops labeled him a John Doe. He didn't have a wallet on him, no licence, student ID, credit/debit card? That 'police force' has a lot to answer for.

Dishonest seems to be the kindest thing one can say about those cops.
