A five-year-old boy from California obsessed with garbage trucks got the surprise of a lifetime from the garbage man he religiously greets at his family's home every Monday.
~snip~
Daniel, who has autism, is drawn to the order and precision that comes with the weekly trash pickup and the organization of the trash cans, his mother says.
~snip~
On Monday, Daniel and his parents - Newberger and dad, David Mulligan - did their usual routine of waiting outside for the recyclables collector, Manuel Sanchez, to arrive, when Sanchez surprised them all.
Sanchez, an employee of a private, family-owned trash collection company, got out of his truck and presented Daniel with a toy garbage truck of his own.

I wish there were more like Mr Sanchez. And I hope his employer
knows he got the kind of advertising money can't buy.

(19,926 posts)If we elevate simple kindness and generosity to hero status then society is in a sad state.
But I know what you mean by that.

(1,135 posts)Manuel is the man! What a sweet thing for him to do. I had to watch it twice.
We have an eleven yo. grandson who is high on the spectrum now, but started out much lower. With great parents and therapy he has come so far. He is the light of my life and he loves his Nana and granddad. He says, we are best friends and will sit on my lap (only me) to watch "Annoying Orange" on YouTube and we laugh together. He is a joy that I can't describe.

(21,181 posts)As a parent if a grown son with autism every now and the I experienced kindness from strangers when I was dealing with my son. From the pilot who let my son sit in cockpit seat, to the trainer at the 49er training camp who gave us a special tour of the facilities, to the lovely person who gave us ice cream on a hot day to distract my son from melting down the kindness of strangers is a joy that restores my faith in humanity. I doubt this garbage man makes a lot of money.

(23,156 posts)what I'm most struck by is how the mom's speech patterns and intonations are like that of someone speaking to a much, much younger child. Long before my son was diagnosed (in part because he was born in 1982 and Asperger's first showed up as diagnosable in 1994) I knew that I had to coach him in ways parents of "normal" kids didn't have to. I think we parents instinctively do what should be done. If you have a kid who's "normal" you don't have to do that kind of coaching for as long. You just naturally move on.
I know that the bigger point, which I certainly appreciate, is the kindness of the driver, which in a way has nothing to do with Daniel's special circumstances. Being this nice is how we should all treat each other.
Thank you for posting this.
