A survey of academics has found that Eleanor Roosevelt was the nation's best first lady. Michelle Obama ranks fifth.
The findings from the Siena College/C-SPAN poll were released Saturday.
Hillary Clinton dropped from fourth to sixth since the last survey in 2008.
Abigail Adams kept her second place standing, and Jacqueline Kennedy retained third place. Dolley Madison was fourth.
Clinton is seen as the former first lady with the most presidential potential.

edit: I posted this on my FB, because some of my high school friends, surprisingly repug, with whom I don't disagree in a confrontational way, appear to be 'missing' that 'wonderful' Laura Bush!!! Wanted to give these friends somethings to chew on.

(22,308 posts)She even has a little "mini Memorial" within FDR's.
I can't argue with Eleanor being ranked first. I don't know enough to argue the rankings of any of them, but I do love that four of the top six are Democrats (and the other two are from so long ago that the current political parties did not exist).
P.S. I love the FDR memorial. Clearly my favorite. It also has a life size image of him (besides a larger than life one) and a statue of his dog Fala. Very different from all the huge, dehumanizing monuments that dominate the National Mall.

(7,955 posts)Even as a child her mother and grandmother were cold and dismissive of her. I believe that is where she got her empathy from-as a reaction to them.

(9,865 posts)as a politician and people-connector. He could win elections--no minor set of talents. But she was much more progressive than he was and her pressure on him made him become our greatest President.
Their gifts together were a perfect storm of saving the country. And not sure we'd have Social Security without her.
Our worst first lady without a doubt was Nancy Reagan.
She turned a Democrat into......Reagan.
Will we ever recover?

(16,846 posts)From the start, she seemed to set the tone for so much of what the 80's were about -- the conspicuous consumption, the mindless adulation of that bumbling old fool. She left a nasty stain on that position. I hope we never have another like her.

(130,972 posts)Depends on the standards one uses, I guess, and without knowing this, its hard to tell.
C-SPAN has had a First Ladies feature, and shows there's a lot to learn about all of them.
Edit: C-SPAN tonight: Michelle Obama

(7,143 posts)for her earnest support of the Civil Rights Act alone. Her beautification programs, likewise, were incredibly important at the time.
Probably would move Ford up the list as well.

(52,162 posts)the train trip she took through the South just after the Civil Right's act of 64 was amazingly courageous.

(5,252 posts)That has to be a slap in the face for Hillary to be ranked below Jackie.

(57,936 posts)She even beats Jacqueline Kennedy on that count, and beats Jackie hands down. Michelle Obama also wins first prize for the most fit First Lady.
