Rude Pundit: Abraham Lincoln Would Fuck Up the Shit of Today's Republicans

At the beginning of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, whose Republican Party wasn't filled with barking madmen, went to Congress to ask for the funds to pay for the brutal lesson the Confederacy was going to have to learn. In the speech he gave at that special session of Congress, the tall dude with the hairy face mole laid out what he thought the purpose of a nation, a "United States," was. And it is antithetical to everything that Republicans and, indeed, many Democrats believe. He delivered this message on the Fourth of July, 1861, because the man knew symbolism:

Much good words from both Lincoln and Washington about what this country is about and what Government itself is about.

I once read an opinion piece said to have been written by the minority of the Vermont delegation, the ones who voted against joining the Union. They objected to the pact with the devil that was the slave system. At that time, there was slavery in some Northern places, most notably in New York State right across the border from Vermont. It is a chilling opinion piece; every one of their dire predictions came true, including the Civil War and little children around the globe being taught to lisp curses on us.

If he were still alive today he'd still be a Republican. At best he was a moderate on some issues and was actually responsible for much of the cold war despite railing against the military industrial complex. He was also responsible for a long shitlist of foreign policy fuckups not unlike the Republican war hawks of recent memory. Republicans don't have much use for him today because he ended a considerable amount of segregation, although the political pressures were too intense for him to do much else. Back then you still had a lot of Northern Republicans who were anti-racist at least relative to the times.

Lincoln was a progressive and would no doubt be a Democrat today along with Teddy Roosevelt.
