Florida led world with 23 unprovoked shark attacks in 2013
The University of Florida's International Shark Attack File released a report Monday that said there were 23 unprovoked shark attacks in Florida last year, most in the United States and more than any other country.
Worldwide there were 72 unprovoked shark attacks, including 10 fatalities. The United States had 47 attacks. Of the US, Hawaii had thirteen, South Carolina had six and Alabama, California, North Carolina, Oregon and Texas had one each.
A shark attack in Hawaii was the nation's only fatality. Australia and R?union each had two shark attack deaths while Brazil, Diego Garcia, Jamaica, New Zealand and South Africa had one each.
Florida's Volusia County (Daytona Beach area) led the state with eight attacks.

So who needs trigger happy nutjobs when there are sharks to take up the slack. Or for that matter ... pythons, gators, rattlers, moccasins, black widows, sinkholes, hurricanes, and on and on.

(26,603 posts)they've hooked or speared? Or maybe swimmers or divers who poke at or tease a shark until it reacts? (I know around here we have plenty of sharks and eels and whatnot that are generally lethargic, but if you wiggle a finger at them long enough they'll bite it off for you.) Or it could just be an accidental stepping-on that counts as provocation - we learn early to shuffle as you walk in the surf...

(11 posts)Or do you have a personal database with each loonie-related incident in each state?
2) Why do you blame Floridians for shark attacks?
3) My aunt lives in Orlando. Does she share responsibility for shark attacks?
