Nebraska independents will be able to vote in Democratic primary election

LINCOLN — Starting this year, you won't have to be a Democrat to vote in the Democratic Party primary election.

The Nebraska Democratic Party leadership has decided to let independents cast ballots in the primary for all levels of elected offices.

Vince Powers, the state Democratic Party chairman, said the decision to open up the primary is part of the Democrats' efforts to encourage voter turnout.

“This vote emphasizes the openness of our party and the great importance we place on the political process and voter participation in all elections,” he said.

As Jackpine noted, this isn't necessarily all good. Cross-over voters can move a Party away from its principles during the primary, then revert to their natural Party affiliation in the general election.


Assuming the Party in question has any principles, of course.
