Creepy Canada

Normally I would post this in the Canada forum, but thought it better that our PM's efforts be exposed to a wider audience as he continues implementing a neocon, right-wing agenda. We are learning his agenda also includes a simultaneous ramp up of spying on and intimidation of any serfs and peons daring to publicly object to his policies (making a mockery of the phrase "True North Strong and Free" in our national anthem). Those Americans who might be tempted to think, "If it all goes to hell in the USA, I'll just move to Canada", take note.

Creepy Canada
Now we're the Great Weird North, where citizens are to be spied on and not heard.

Is Canada getting creepy? It's getting close to Valentine's Day and perhaps a good time for Canadians to check in on our relationship with our federal government. The key ingredient in any relationship is trust -- something that has to go both ways. And I for one am not feeling the love.

Revelations last week that Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) was spying on Canadians cell phones through airport Wi-Fi networks only came to light due to documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden. Ontario's privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian said she was "blown away" by the news, adding that CSEC's methods seemed those of a "totalitarian state, not a free and open society."

If the "Harper Government" is suspicious about the general Canadian population, they are downright paranoid about people opposed to pipelines. In 2012, Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver referred to Canadians questioning pipeline expansions as "environmental and other radical groups that would seek to block this opportunity to diversify our trade." A month later Ottawa released a revised anti-terrorism strategy that lumped environmentalists in with white supremacists as a threat to national security.

Seven major environmental organizations are now being targeted by Ottawa to have their charitable status revoked. Somehow Finance Minister Jim Flaherty found an extra $8 million in the 2012 belt-tightening budget that was specifically earmarked for Canada Revenue Agency to pursue some of the most vocal critics of pipeline projects. As Stephen Harper promised, our country is becoming unrecognizable.

Our system sucks big time.

NDP called the other day looking for donations. I usually do support them but my hours were cut at work and I'm back in school so don't have any spare money these days. I told the guy that my $20 here and there wouldn't help anyhow unless NDP and the Liberals get together somehow and stop splitting the vote. And they had better get over themselves and do it because the country can't afford another run of the Harperites. He said he heard that from lots of people and was happy to pass my comments up the line.

I like our system, but there does need to be more checks on the power of a majority gov't. Domestically, Harper has way more power than Obama does. That is a big problem. But I don't want a system where there is only 2 choices...we did a bit of study on this in poli sci...basically with only 2 choices, the parties end up representing only a few people, because each must choose the opposite position of the other party - for everything. I like our multiparty system. I wish we had proportional representation though.

I mostly blame the Liberals though for our current situation. They did exactly what the democrats did - they shifted right. Look how well that served them in the last few elections (look how it serves Democrats south of the border. It doesn't.) Also, they should've kept Paul Martin as leader, IMO. There wasn't really anyone else for the job at the time. Look who they ended up picking. Look how that worked out. Trudeau, however, is the first Liberal in a long time with a chance...I just don't know if he's up for the job. I like him a lot, but I like Mulcair more. But Mulcair is too prickly for Canadians who want someone charismatic and likeable. You are right...the 2 parties have to get together, we cannot afford more Harper. Or, if the left was smart, they would get the right to start up a national Wildrose party, LOL. The West is always happy to shift further to the right...give them a new party to vote for and split the right again.

Hell, Canada even copy-cats the US freeway and intersection surveillance camera system.

Open your eyes, people.

Its a shame to see other countries that seemed to have much more enlightened policies and values traveling down the road and descending to what the US has become.

I hope you all up there and over there are able to get your political souls back before its too late.

(Of course it would help if socialist politicians would stop acting like morons once they get in office too.)

Until enough of us make a concerted effort to literally pull the plug on this crap, the story is over. It's down to a very few who control everything but without enough worker bees to do their bidding, their bidding won't be done. There needs to be an incentive to convince the rest of the population that their very lives are at stake.

Don't know what that is but soon we won't have the interwebs to communicate freely on. Of course we're being watched now but we can still communicate... for now.

There are far fewer sockpuppets participating in that discussion than we find in strictly US discussions. I guess the Kochs haven't made it a priority yet.
