Grocery Store Worker Fired After Confrontation With North Carolina Governor

TOM KLUDT – FEBRUARY 18, 2014, 8:24 AM EST

A Charlotte grocery store worker is out of a job after he insulted North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) to his face. The Charlotte Observer reported on a confrontation Sunday between McCrory and Drew Swope, a 45-year-old cook at a gourmet food store.

After realizing he was speaking with the governor, whom he disagrees with politically, Swope said he told McCrory, “Thanks for nothing,” and walked away. Swope said the governor was upset at his comment and began “yelling” at him. He said McCrory said he was a customer and shouldn’t be treated that way. He said the governor and his security team complained to the food store owner, who then fired him.

Acknowledging that he "did speak out of turn,” Swope doesn't begrudge the store owner for firing him. But he does find it "shocking" that McCrory “had me excluded from the workplace because I upset his feelings.”

A spokesman for McCrory told the Observer that the governor never raised his voice and that the fired worker actually made an obscene gesture, an accusation that Swope denied. The spokesman also said Swope has said “things about physically harming the governor as well,” citing a Facebook group for a planned protest where participants discussed burning an effigy of McCrory.

On November 5, Obama was won the race for the 13th Senate district, with 82 percent of the vote; perennial unsuccessful Harold Washington Party candidate David Whitehead (13%) and first-time Republican Party candidate Rosette Caldwell Peyton (5%) also ran.[21]

In that district it is over 95% Democratic and so the Democratic candidate automatically wins without campaigning.

That clerk should consider himself fortunate, most peasants would have been jailed and punished...for what he did!!!

Unfortunately, it may be to late...the destruction of a democratic form of government in NC is almost complete, and the birth of a new aristocracy has taken place. The people have spoken and they want to be lorded over by their betters, at least that's what can be assumed from the fact that it was the voters who put McCrory and legislature into the hands of extremists!

So, those horrible people are probably your next door neighbors, if you live in NC. I don't think you'll get much help from them!

our Dem Governor Bev Perdue waited until the last minute to announce she wasn't going to run. The NC Dem party threw in a candidate at the last minute who had no name recognition and no funding. Also , the NC Dem party , who had been in control of the state for the last century was rocked by scandals.

As far as the legislature, Dems actually got more votes and should have gotten control of the Assembly but due to gerrymandering the Repubs got more seats. So, no the people of NC don't have a representative government.

The owner should have backed up his employee, or at least just told him to go back to work. If that wasn't good enough for the governor, I would have told him to take his business elsewhere. Citizens should have the right to tell their governor how they feel, whether they're at work or not.

It's not like he was attending a political rally outside the workplace that his employer disagreed with and fired him. If the employee was rude to the Governor while he was there as a customer, then he should have been fired.

Swope says 'that's not exactly what happened. What I said was, 'thanks for nothing, dickhead', and the governor, who was surrounded by a bunch of really large, angry armed security guys, sort of recoiled, maybe in fear, I don't know, then went into some kind of defcon rage mode, all red faced, his spit flying everywhere, filling himself up like a giant puffer fish and screaming about how he was way important, and how dare I treat him so crudely, how he might not ever recover, just an on and on wail until my ears started to hurt. He kept repeating 'so cruel, so cruel' and clenching these remarkably tiny little fists. Then I got fired."

One thing we know for sure, another thin skinned Republican has increased unemployment in his state.

Now the story is about what a bullying, and possibly LYING, shitbird the governor is, how his staff is trying to fuck with the facebook page and behave in an intimidating fashion. If this guy who got fired has even HALF a personality, he could do five minutes on the DAILY SHOW and make a lotta hay! This was a no-win for the governor, and the fact that he dove in and started getting shirty just speaks volumes.
