Why did CNN quietly reinstate Roland Martin last week?

Do bigots change their stripes in a month?

One would hope that Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon disagreed witih CNN's actions. Bigots, in general, should be marginalized and discredited, not given slaps on the wrist.

This is a really bad message to send about violence against gay folks.

This could be teaching opportunity about prejudice for him. Let's hope that he takes it.

The fact at hand is that he made bigoted tweets about David Beckham's undies and got a 30 day suspension for his actions in that regard.

Before that incident no one had any idea what his beliefs were and that's because he doesn't have a long background in committing violence and bigotry against gays and lesbians. Is he being accused gay bashing someone in the street, or a single act of talking smack, going where he shouldn't?

He expressed regret for his actions, got that suspension with nary a peep and now it's time to move on.

I'm quite sure that if he commits any additional acts of bigotry, his ass will be canned.

9. I can understand why you don't want to engage in a "pointless" debate

because you would not fare well. And, yes, many people were aware of his "beliefs" before this incident:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michelangelo-signorile/roland-martins-history-on_b_1259631.html

In Roland Martin's own words:

"My wife, an ordained Baptist minister for 20 years, has counseled many men and women to walk away from the gay lifestyle, and to live a chaste life...For her, the obligation is to her calling as a minister of the Word, rather than bowing to societal pressures. She loves gay and lesbian church members dearly, and prays with them, talks to them, and breaks bread with them. But what she cannot do is compromise the integrity of the teachings of Christ.

----------------------------------

"It would be nonsense for the body of Christ to launch a gay and lesbian ministry that is not focused on teaching God's Word - including those that address homosexuality. Preaching about the dangers of becoming drunkard - which Paul wrote about in the Bible - must be taught alongside of Jesus' admonition in Matthew 19 that God has only called a man and woman to marry.

"..if someone expects to join a church that is rooted in the Bible, then they should be prepared to hear a sermon that might, in the words of the Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III of Dallas' Friendship-West Baptist Church, "bowl down your alley or sit in your pew." The church is called to love our fellow man, preach the good news and set the captives free - free from a life of sin. That isn't being homophobic. It's being a Christian. And no one should have to apologize for that.

"In a message earlier in the day on Super Bowel Sunday Martin tweeted, "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass."

Have a change of heart yet, Mr. Scorpio?

10. Well, then it's only a matter of time before he falls back on his bigotry, right?

I'm sure that he can't help himself.

But, either he know that he's done wrong and can be given and opportunity the opportunity to change, i.e., education. Or, just toss him in the trash bin.

Confront him, get him and his wife to come over to your side… People can admit they're wrong and change their ways. His remorse from actions belies an opportunity here.

Frankly, I think that it would be a great idea many gays to join his church… Engage, demonstrate the humanity and the right of gays and lesbians to exist as our brothers and sisters. Create a sea change in the church's direction.

Sure, that may be hard to do and, ideally, their opinions of gays and lesbians should NOT be as bigoted as they are in the first place. But like most bigotry, such a thing is based mostly on FEAR. Fear of something that they don't understand.

You should want people to come to your way of thinking… Sometimes that takes involvement instead of conflict.

Allies are better as examples.

but in the meantime, do we want this toxic asshole on television endangering the lives of gay kids? Why do we have to coddle homophobes on air?

14. You first asked why he was reinstated...

The fact is that he completed his suspension for his actions over that tweet.

There are bigger issues at hand, as I'm sure that you know.

Rehashing what is past is not going to get you the action that you desire… His complete removal should have been addressed initially.

It may have been considered as part of his punishment, as was the totality of his work for CNN.

He has a spot light on him… Shine it brighter, see what happens.

If he's as bad and unrepentant as you think he is, you just may get your wish for his removal eventually.

15. I don't recall there being a time period set for his suspension

Hence my original question. They could have "suspended" him indefinitely.

And it's not that I "think" he's bad - just read his own words. They could have come directly from Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell. It's not up to me to reform these monsters. But I, and you, and every other putative progressive, have the moral obligation to destroy their political agenda.

13. Why would those 2 disagree with Roland?

Joe Scarbrow was lamenting the comments made a few weeks earlier by Pat Buchanan when Joe was talking about the Republican presidential race this morning on his program.
Joe said that Pat was right when he said that the fastest runner wins the race.
But, Joe doesn't like Mitt very much.

He was crying and whining and bawling because Mitt won in Illinois yesterday, and now he thinks the race is over, and that Mitt will be their nominee.
He said that he didn't think Mitt would do well against Obama this fall, and then he added that Chris Christie could probably beat Obama this fall because he's a real fighter.
