Was the Zimmerman telegram a forgery?

(sorry for the jest. it's just odd seeing "Zimmerman" everywhere. The Zimmerman telegram was a famous diplomatic cable from 1917 about Mexico joining Germany to make war against the US. It's authenticity has sometimes been questioned, as to whether it was real or a British attempt to get us into WWI. I think most folks accept it today, but I'm not sure.)

But this could blow this case wide open!

Reading GD just now I felt like I was on DU 1.0 back in 1917.

I was being puckishly controversial in revisiting the old controversy as to whether it was real or not, but since the OP is a jest I realized there was no need to.

Mexico was in revolution, the US Army under Brigadier General Pershing was moving with impunity through Mexico hunting Villa. The Navy and Marines had taken Veracruz in 14 and frankly Mexico had no way to invade the USA and retake the lands ceded under the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. the Imperial German staff vastly overestimated Mexican capability. And Aid sent to Mexico had to be able to get through the Royal Navy blockade and then also through the US Navy. The Mexican Staff said it to be a ludicris idea as they would not only face the US Army, but millions of armed civilians.

However it did give that racist bastard Wilson the excuse he needed to declare war on Germany.
