Why Florida?

I keep asking myself that question. Why Florida? Well, after trying out many, many answers, here's the article that has given me the best answer:

...

Problems in the 6-year-old community started during the recession, when foreclosures forced owners to rent out to “low-lifes and gangsters,” said Frank Taaffe, a former neighborhood block captain.

“Just two weeks before this shooting, George called me at my girlfriend’s house to say he saw some black guy doing surveillance at my house, because I had a left a window open,” Taaffe said. “He thwarted a potential burglary of my house.”

Taaffe sounded chagrined when he noted that the complex is now majority-minority. Census figures show Retreat at Twin Lakes is 49 percent white, non-Hispanic, 23 percent Hispanic, 20 percent African-American and 5 percent Asian.

He suspects Zimmerman got tired of thugs “and reached his breaking point,” Taaffe said. “But why was he carrying a gun? Why not carry pepper spray or a Taser? That’s bizarre-o.”

(tip of the hat to DUer gvstn for pointing me to the article)

Imagine you paid top dollar to buy a home that would insure you were surrounded by people of your same socio-economic class, if not race - walled in to keep the Others out.

Then the real estate market collapses.

Soon you find yourself gated into a community of folks one or two steps down a perceived class ladder who rent for pennies on the dollar. And now you and a few long time neighbors are the minority and those very same Others are the majority.

So basically the fact that Florida is the epicenter of the collapsed real estate boom is forcing Florida to confront, in a single generation, demons that the rest of the US may never confront.

But, if I don't miss my guess, a generation or two from now, Florida will be a perfectly lovely place to live. The parents may never get it, but the kids will.

1. It'll be perfectly lovely in Central and South Florida, not Northern Florida.

Northern Florida bears far more in common with Mississippi than with a place like Miami or Orlando. I would say it would remain so for the next generation, at least.

Who work their whole life to get an oceanfront condo and after 2 weeks never go out on the balcony again.

4. The funny thing is I do live in Mississippi and did live in Orlando. I saw this firsthand.

But truth be told, the coastal areas of Mississippi are far more tolerable than anything deeper inland. The deeper you go, the more socially conservative it becomes. Orlando and Miami are melting pots. You meet so many different people and are in contact with so many cultures. I remember before staff meetings working for Disney World hearing French, Creole, Spanish, Portuguese, and English being spoken at the same time before the meeting was called to order.

5. I'm sure both you and they were right. I was laughing at myself.

States are almost never homogeneous things.

Here in PA, the old joke is "I thought I knew geography, but I found that Mississippi lies between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia."

6. Zimmerman was a renter

He was a delusional cop wanna be. He could have lived anywhere. The problem with that neighborhood is that the units are crammed together with no space and no privacy. It is located in West Sanford close to the best areas. I looked at a unit in there and they were nice but no parking and no common areas or amenities. This was a case of shoddy police work. The narcotics detective who handled this case on a rainy Sunday night screwed up big time. I am going down to the rally with Rev Al this evening. Kids around here have taken to wearing Skittles taped to their arms.
I am so sorry for Trayvons family but don't lay this off on Florida there are wackos with guns EVERYWHERE.

7. This is clearly much more systemic than Zimmerman.....

The cops and some neighbors have clearly rallied to his defense. Systemic symptoms have systemic causes.

Of course it's not an entire state - that's why I look for the socio-economic problems that make it SEEM that way.
