The death Friday of a 43-year-old Omaha police officer demonstrates how deadly a strain of the H1N1 influenza virus can be for younger adults, health officials say.

Greg Hamill, a 12-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, died at Methodist Hospital after being admitted last week. His death was attributed to complications of H1N1, a pandemic strain that swept the world in 2009.

Hamill had “a huge heart,” said Officer James Shade, a police spokesman. “He genuinely cared about people.”

His organs were removed for transplant on Friday.

An Omaha police officer continues to recover from serious injuries after a traffic stop Thursday morning. Officer Lou Tomsu was investigating an accident between a garbage truck and a tow-truck hauling another garbage truck at 50th and L Streets. His cruiser was parked behind the vehicles when an SUV hit the rear end of the cruiser and pushed it into the garbage truck. Officer Tomsu was pinned in the cruiser.

Witness Chris Christensen says rescue crews had to use the jaws-of-life to get the officer out of the vehicle and that took a while. He saw the officer had blood on his face.

Officer Tomsu suffered broken ribs and a cut to the back of his head. He is in serious but stable condition.
