He quit on election day in 1974. He started smoking again on Wednesday. Later that month he went elk hunting in Montana with three non-smokers. He threw his cigarettes in the fire. Since they were 50 miles from the nearest store he has been smoke free ever since.

On December 24, 2009 he had a heart valve replaced. They only found one artery that needed a bi-pass. His heart troubles were from an infection, not smoking or high cholesterol.

When my dad was in his 50s he said he was going to start smoking again when he turned 80. He's now 82 and still smoke free.

My mother stopped smoking at age 60 and my dad did not notice for about a week.

so for 3 days a smoker trying to quit needs a lot of slack cut by the people around him/her.

After that, it's just habit, not addiction.

We had the docs on cardiac units well trained and Xanax was prescribed for any smokers that were admitted with heart attacks. It helped them a lot during that first awful 3 days.

Me... started 1971
ended 2packs/day habit on Aug 27, 2011

Did it cold turkey. Chewed on straws, toothpicks, cinnamon sticks. Used a zero-nicotine e-cig if the cravings got REALLY bad.

No cravings any more! I don't use the e-cig any more either.

Hang in there. It gets easier.

I started smoking at the tender young age of 13 in 1954 quit a 3 pack a day habit on June 5th at 5PM 1991 it was tough, probably hardest thing I have ever done but damn sure was worth it..Smoking is actually a double edged habit one is nicotine addiction and the other is the process habit of lighting up both are hard to kick. Hang in there as others have stated it does get better

vaping helped me a bunch, too. I started at 18 mg juice, and am down to 6. I also am not using it as much. I still have my daily pipe, though. Of course, I don't inhale that as often, and pipes and books just seem to go hand in hand.

I quit in 1997 (started in 1973)- it took me two years slowly tapering off on nicotine gum to do it. I gained 70 pounds and only recently lost 20 pounds of it. After 3 years seeing actors smoke on Waterworld made me ANGRY and I was still having significant cravings. Statistics say 50% re-start within two years and 80% re-start withing 5 years. It takes more than 5 years to be a true success story. The bottom line I will never start again because I quit so many times Ill be damned if I put myself in the situation where I will have to quit again - now on to weight loss efforts.

I live in Las Vegas. If I ever get a hankerin' for tobacco, I just go to the nearest casino to remember why I don't really want to smoke.

Interesting article in The Guardian about e-cigs and vaping:

It looks like vaping is helping thousands of people quit.

Good luck! If you ever need encouragement, you can find several friends right here. There are also forums just for vaping which are pretty good.

37. I really didn't want to quit
Sat Feb 22, 2014, 06:00 PM
Feb 2014

There were plenty of great reasons for me to quit, but I really "enjoyed" it and had no desire to stop. However, I found out I would have to stop before an elective surgery procedure. I ordered a hypnosis CD from the program that helped me stop once for 7 months...and then my neighbor came over and showed me the e-device that enabled him to get off the cigs. We ordered one for me, and when it arrived he got me started.
It arrived on a Wednesday; I lit up -- and snuffed out in disgust -- my last Kool Blue on Monday night. These babies have to be available to everyone who smokes! I just hope that legislators, for whatever reason, do not make them harder to get. Easiest way to quit EVER.

41. I started vaping just to try it after a 40 year cigarette habit. First I tried the 0 mg nicotine
Sat Feb 22, 2014, 06:22 PM
Feb 2014

but that just became an adjunct to the regular cigs.

So I tried a better flavor, and 26 mg of nicotine. Without even thinking about it I set the other cigs down and it was a week before I thought about them.

Haven't had a cigarette now in months, and I am using 12 mg nicotine, and on occasion 0.

These things work.

(Btw, I have found myself, a few times, reaching for cigs, reaching for a lighter, etc. Grabbed my vaper and did a few puffs till that went away. No rushing to the store to buy overpriced cancer sticks. yay. It is interesting how deep those cigs change you over the years, and how utterly ignorant most people are about what it takes to get away).

I think the health departments would do a public service by handing these out on the public nickel. It would save us hundreds of millions in the costs of cigarettes today, I think.

Don't make a challenge out of it. But just keep it next to your cigarette pack. When you want a cigarette, take a few hits off the ecig. Then, if you still want one, light up.

You start realizing how inconvenient cigarettes are, since when you light one, you have to smoke the whole thing. And it's particularly inconvenient if you have to go outside.

I quit in '77 after smoking for 25 or so years and by the time I made it to day three I knew I had it made. I kept a pack with me at all times just in case and at one point I opened the pack but didn't smoke one. At this point just keep putting off that you'll smoke on when you get the urge. That urge goes away pretty quick and with each passing time it gets further and further apart.

Good luck and congratulations

I've vaped my own DIY chocolate juice for over 3 years now. Because I make it myself, I know exactly what's in it and I can make a 30 ml bottle in about 5 minutes. Once I found a good American-made clear Double Chocolate flavoring, it was simple.

I use a variable volt 900 mah battery (kr808d1 compatible) that lasts about 4 to 6 hours of heavy vaping. I keep 3 of them in rotation and that works pretty well. I've had no complaints and no problems with my set up in quite a while -- several years, plus. Love it.
