Liberal groups urge lawmakers to reject Obama judge pick
Aamer Madhani, USA TODAY 1:32 p.m. EST February 20, 2014
A coalition of 27 liberal groups on Thursday called on Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject one of President Obama's judicial nominees.
The groupswhich include NARAL Pro-Choice America, Human Rights Campaign and MoveOnsaid in a letter to Democratic committee members that Michael Boggs has a "record that lacks a demonstrated commitment to fairness and equal justice with respect to issues of reproductive freedom, civil rights, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality."
The groups have taken exception to Boggs, who is currently a Georgia appeals court judge, because of his opposition to same-sex marriage and his support of legislation restricting abortion access restrictions. They also note his backing of keeping the Confederate symbol on Georgia's state flag during his time serving on that state's legislature.
Prominent civil rights leaders, including Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis and C.T. Vivian and Joseph Lowery, have already called on Obama to withdraw Boggs and Mark Cohen, another federal court nominee who as an attorney defended Georgia's state voter ID law.... MORE

Democracy has consequences, both ways.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus met with Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett earlier this month to express concern over the nominations.
The black lawmakers have been upset over the nomination of Mark Cohen, who defended a voter ID law in court. They also are annoyed Obama nominated only one black judge, Eleanor Ross, who happens to be a Republican.

(37,549 posts)and plaintiffs in that circuit who await their cases. Only someone who wants to break and deconstruct government likes an empty judiciary.
At the same time you have the blue slip problem.... which essentially gives a backdoor veto to the Senators in conservative states.... and perpetuates a system of privilege by the Senators.
I love Senator Leahy... But he needs to be held accountable for enabling the Republicans in this madness.

Although let me compliment you: usually when I point out something like this, I am accused of beingan Obamabot, and the poster never, ever reads the links I give them and continues in the dogged insistence that it PBO's fault. You didn't do that. Thank you!

(36,392 posts)If he and the congress he had in 09-10 had not appeased the republicans who had just been trounced at the polls, he would have gotten more dems in the next one. But then he would have no excuse for enacting republican policies.
