A Michigan man fatally shot himself in the head while he was teaching his girlfriend gun safety, according to The Detroit Free Press.
The man shot himself Sunday in his home in Independence Township, according to The Oakland County sheriff's office. He was pronounced dead at the scene according to the Detroit newspaper.
Police said that the man, whose name was not released, had been trying to show his girlfriend gun safety with three pistols. He put the first two guns to his head and pulled the trigger. When the man pulled the trigger on the third pistol the gun went off.
The man's girlfriend said he had been drinking throughout the day while he was showing her the guns.

I'll bet he would write about the same thing you just did....and now look!

(955 posts)Considering the tenuous definition of gun safety he had, his girlfriend should probably be glad he wasn't pointing them at her and pulling the trigger.

(118,338 posts)(1) Alcohol is a safe relaxant to use when handling guns
(2) To assume a gun is loaded, just because you don't know otherwise, is a logical fallacy, known to logicians as argumentum ad ignorantiam. Do not commit this fallacy! You should assume instead a gun is unloaded until you know for sure otherwise
(3) The idea, that it is unsafe to point a gun at something, is a myth started by gun control nuts
(4) Manly men can best show their superiority to their hysterical screechy girlfriends by pointing guns and pulling the triggers
(5) Recent statistics prove that two guns out of every three will not discharge when pointed at your head

That's the only gun lesson I remember. It stuck.
Guess this guy's dad must have been a bit lax in the lesson department.

(11,441 posts)the LAST thing we'd be doing is having a lesson in gun safety. Maybe she had been drinking all day as well, with her judgment impaired.

(8,086 posts)One never knows. Could be too she was scared shitless, having a drunk boyfriend waving a gun around, and agreed to anything he said just not to get shot. Either way, it must have been awful afterwards.
I've never personally seen anyone shot, for any reason, but I certainly know people who have. All of them were traumatized, some worse than others, depending on the circumstances. Whatever the case, I hope she gets the help she needs.
Best wishes.

(4,524 posts)The repeated attempts by gun advocates to cast them as "safe in the right hands" are dangerous at best.
They should always be treated like the dangerous weapons that they are. I've seen so much stooopid from gun owners that I feel like guns aren't given enough respect in this country. This includes someone whose gun was in his pocket, which fell out onto the floor. I mean, really?
There simply is no safe gun. By definition, a gun cannot be safe, much like a machete or chainsaw cannot be safe. If you're going to be a gunowner, treat your gun like a live grenade - it's a weapon that, while fun to shoot and provides protection, is also highly dangerous.
Training doesn't make guns less dangerous. It allows you to compensate for their dangerous nature by handling them with care and taking precautions.
