Group says new evidence in Texas arson-murder case

Group says new evidence in Texas arson-murder case

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The Innocence Project argued Friday that newly discovered documents undermine the credibility of a key witness against a Texas man executed for the deaths of his three children based in part on arson evidence that has since been deemed faulty.

The New York-based nonprofit said it has discovered a handwritten note that suggests a prosecutor gave a lesser charge to jailhouse informant Johnny Webb, who testified that Cameron Todd Willingham told Webb he killed his daughters in 1991.

That would contradict claims made at trial by Webb and prosecutor John Jackson that Webb did not receive consideration for his testimony.

"It's astonishing that 10 years after Todd Willingham was executed we are still uncovering evidence showing what a grave injustice this case represents," Barry Scheck, the Innocence Project's co-director, said in a statement.

Here are a few previous DU threads about this development:

As I understand it, the jailhouse informant has since recanted his testimony that Cameron Todd Willingham admitted to him that he set the fire. From what I understand, most experts who have reviewed reports of the fire aftermath are of the opinion that the fire started because of an overloaded electrical circuit.

I find this horrific, A man losses his family to a terrible accident and then faces his own death at the hands of these cretins. It must have been unbearable for him.
Texas and pro-death penalty advocates must accept that they executed an innocent man.

further investigation. It is a landmine for any future presidential run by him. I will go out of my way when he cruises in Iowa to hold up a Willingham sign. I would say this whatever party he was from. It was disgusting how he shut down the investigation.

He had ample evidence before Willingham died that the arson report was very likely wrong. The investigators were using old and discredited methods. I don't know if he even bothered to read it.

I believe Willingham was innocent. Perry didn't care because even if he had doubts about his guilt, Willingham was just another 'loser' to him. Perry is and was the biggest loser of all.

I get furious every time I hear this case mentioned.
