http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/0d435WPSa5yDURGVEE9qYA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTE5MA--/After a California family moved away, their neighbors discovered they'd left their longhaired Chihuahua and a kitten behind. Neighbors could hear the pair in the backyard of their home, where they found the 1-year-old dog nursing the 5-month-old kitten she'd decided to adopt as her own.
They were brought to a local shelter, and arrived at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., last week. Today, they'll be introduced to the public in the rescue's 2 nd Annual Doggie Gras Parade and Fat Cat Tuesday Celebration.
The two have been aptly named for their Mardi Gras debut - the pup is now called Beignet and her kitten son is known as Gumbo. "They love each other. That's all there is to it. It's not complicated," said the center's inventory manager, Labeth Thompson. "They needed each other and they were there for each other." The parade serves as the kickoff to find a new home where the bonded duo can live together. - Read it from the Helen Woodward Animal Center

Happily the two are safe, and I'd like to find those assholes that abandoned both of them...

(14,549 posts)As much as our society loves companion animals, we still have a lot of issues to work out. It is easy to want to punish the people who did this but we also need to work on prevention and creating better options.

(56,177 posts)the county shelter is an option...they're probably NOT no-kill, but leaving a pet to die a slow agonizing death from starvation is worse, IMHO.

(9,126 posts)I did not know how anyone could abandon their pet until our neighbors did it. Then the wife of a rich & famous guy I work with was talking about how she got a new kitten and her older cat didn't like it. So she decided to take her older cat and put it in her Lexus and drop it off in the hills!!! I was so aghast and disgusted that this pampered, nasty, selfish woman didn't think for one second that she was basically guaranteeing that cat suffering and death. I asked her why she didn't try to adopt it out and she just made a gesture and said, "Oh, whatever, he's fine." And then how much cuter the kitten was. I'm surprised I held back from strangling her.
It seems like people really are that clueless. I didn't know that as taking care of animals properly has always seemed like second nature to me. But it needs to be taught. Just like we see that ignorance is handed down through families, ignorance about pets is too. I guess the best we can do is educate, especially with spay and neuter. But also encouraging people who are not ready to NOT get a pet is a good idea too.

(3,428 posts)I live in a semi-rural area. In the 1970s, some one in a Volkswagen van dropped off, in front of my house, a part-siamese cat. I had her for 22 years. In 1997, someone, didn't see the car, dropped off a part-siamese/egyptian mau cat. He is still alive, but with limited kidney function and an inoperable, for now, eye tumor. These cats came with mucho personality and I've loved them with all my heart!

(676 posts)The title says country club, which technically is correct since it is in the country and it is a club. Only costs the family $75 a month to play, not like your typical country club.
Anyway, there are at least a half dozen stray dogs roaming the course that we feed and they are dogs that people have just dropped off.

(153,169 posts)when I moved from one city to another in Texas, I fretted about how my cat would take it - a friend of mine - a GOOD friend of mine, said, "Why don't you just let him go?" WTF - I practically had a meltdown.

(28,762 posts)his tom cat. About a week after they moved the cat found my house. He died this winter, I think of old age.

(28,762 posts)and to let us know feel free to visit them if we ever got down that way. I thanked him for the offer and told him you forgot to take your cat. He said the cat has built in survival instincts and wasn't worried about him. I then let him have it and told him the cat has found a better home and is doing fine!
Never have went down to Florida, (but if we ever do) he would be the last person I would want to see!

(56,177 posts)Cats don't have any special sruvival skills, too many people believe that...unless Mom taught the cat how to hunt, the cat probably will hunt and kill, but won't figure that it's food...it will go scavenging through trash like dogs do.
God, what an asshole he was...glad you gave it to him.

(3,179 posts)how people can simply abandon a companion who wants nothing more than their devotion and love be returned in kind. It breaks my heart to imagine how confused and frightened they must have been.
I hope they have a long life together with a caring family.

(27,985 posts)The life of the animal. Including the difficulties. It isn't something to be done on a whim or without understanding the aforementioned. But there are so many who lack that understanding. It's damned angry making.

(8,462 posts)Moved out in the middle of the night, took their pit bull-like dog, left the older german shepherd type one. Poor thing. At least a neighbor across the street noticed the dog and called animal control before something worse happened.
THey were annoying neighbors. I hope my new ones are better (especially if they have pets).

(685 posts)Why is the dog lactating? I wonder if it had puppies nearby, or is this another use of the term "nursing"? Also seems odd that a 5 month old "kitten" would suckle.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)even a five month old kitten.

(685 posts)So if that's the case, then I wonder what happened to her puppies.

(56,177 posts)I'm sure these assholes didn't fix either pet...but if there were puppies, and they took the pupppies and left Mom, then that gives their assholery a whole new level.

(1,945 posts)Years ago I took in a cat that had been used as a breeder. She was rescued from that owner, spayed and given to me. Shortly after that I adopted a pair of kittens that were a young enough that I needed to bottle feed them for a while. At some point the female heard the kittens mewing and took over mothering them-- washing them and letting them 'nurse' on her. I know they were not getting any milk, but I think it was just a comfort thing for all three of them. It was an interesting relationship to see.
Hopefully in the case of the dog/cat they were found shortly after the original (a-hole) owners left and were not yet at the point of starving.

(50,566 posts)have had pets for a couple years and then post things on Facebook like: "I need to find a new home for my dog" or "I have two cats I need to find a new home for right away." I am always aghast and it makes me want to tell these people off. These are not situations where somebody suddenly got sick or died -- they have to do with things like moving. I would no sooner permanently give up my cats if my housing situation changed than I would give my kids away.
