How do you like the Olympic movement now?

Four days after attending the Olympic closing ceremonies, Putin invades part of the Ukraine.

This is another terrible event in a long line of terrible events associated with the Olympics. (Hitler's Olympics, the killing in Munich, the Atlanta bombing, the 1980 Olympics while Russia had occupied Afghanistan, the 2002 Olympics in Utah while America was at war in Afghanistan and preparing for war in Iraq, the stripping of medals from two African American athletes in the Mexico games and the shatttered shell of the Olympic stadium in the former Yugoslavia. And let's not forget the debt, especially the debt that help sink Greece.)

Yeah, we shouldn't boycott the homophobe's Olympics because the athletes have worked sooooo hard. Their "protest" against the poor treatment of gays in Russia was so passive that no one saw it. What a joke. Maybe our pampered athletes were in too big of a rush to get back to New York to cash in on their success.

Next time, we can disregard the pampered athletes and boycott the Olympics. Homophobe Putin's Olympics joins the list.

I'm not saying the Olympics had anything to do with Putin''s actions but they sure didn't stop him did they?

The Olympic movement should help bring about peace to the world and they never have.

the idea of the Olympics or the Olympics themselves to bring about world peace. That's kind of naive. Putin or any other asshole leader won't change their mind because of the Olympics.

The Olympics are for countries to come together in the spirit of competition with any political bullshit.

And since you are locked out, I'll guess your answer: "what about taxes?"

From Wiki: "Unlike most other nations, the USOC does not receive direct government funding for Olympic programs (except for select Paralympic military programs)." Even if it did, the measly amount that would go to that would pale in comparison to what is spent on a single bomber or warship. I think sports is a worthy investment.

PS. The whole everyone who disagrees with me is a tea bagger or republican is kind of dense. Good luck with the getting a handle on things..

Taking world events out on athletes that have trained their whole lives for this (you couldn't do 1 day of what these "pampered" athletes do). Can we look forward to another hissy fit where you call me a teabagger also?

Most do not "cash in" either.
Only a lucky few get to monetize their win.
And only if they get the Gold.
Most of our Olympic competitors live regular lives and sacrifice a lot to fulfill their dreams.
And our country has already forgotten most of their names because a new season of The Voice started last week.

Second, I notice in your loooong list of Olympic atrocities you fail to mention the 1972 Munich Games murders of Israeli athletes as a "terrible event".
Are you an anti-Semite? Do you hate Israel?
It could appear so because you list a pipe bomb that killed no one and a simple event boycott in 1980 as worse events than mass murder in 1972.

Third, Is your problem with Putin's Russia or The Olympics?
Do you want to punish the athletes because they went?
When you mash it all up in one big rant it's hard to tell what you really mean.
Please explain.
I think it will be personally entertaining to hear that.

The athletes got to fulfill their dreams, observe people from other cultures, they left glowing reports of their experiences .... and a nation of people who have no more control of what their lawmakers do than do we in the west got to experience the same pride and benefits as any other country who has been involved in wars, coups and everything else that's brought horror to hundreds/millions of people. What is happening in the Ukraine has absolutely no bearing on the Sochi Olympics.

Lets get some facts straight before I go crazy. First of all do not blame the athletes as they are competitors. Secondly the modern day Olympic sites are picked 6 years before they occur so Salt Lake City was chosen in 1996. Did you want us to just up and quit and say sorry we got attacked so nobody is allowed to come to Utah. Same thing with Moscow in 1980 and we did boycott those games. Munich shattered the idea of the Olympics being safe for the athletes. Atlanta was the act of a single man who was making a political statement about gays and abortion and is now in jail. Yugoslavia was about the death of Tito and the subsequent reprisals for very old wounds that had been hidden by Tito. As for Mexico City it was the U.S. Olympic committee that stripped the medals from Juan Carlos not the IOC. That was Avery Brundeges last great act.

The problem with the Olympics is not the games or the athletes it is the IOC that will overlook everything in the name of the almighty dollar. The next time the US could potentially host the Olympics will be 2024 or 2026 at the earliest. Currently the IOC is pissed off at the USOC because we refuse to give them a bigger chuck of the sponsorship money that companies like McDonalds and Coca Cola pay to the USOC to support our athletes. The U.S. is still the only nation that does not have a government supported Olympic team and so the athletes rely on endorsements to support their training, particularly the winter athletes.

If you don't like the Olympics that is your right but don't blame the athletes.
