The government will again extend the Temporary Protected Status for Haitians living in the United States for an additional 18 months, officials announced Monday.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson will extend the status for eligible nationals of Haiti from July 23, 2014 through Jan. 22, 2016, said a release from U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The status was given to Haitian nationals after their homeland was devastated by a 7.0-earthquake in January 2010.

The status is granted generally to undocumented individuals from countries that the Department of Homeland Security has designated a place where civil unrest or natural disaster makes returning home unsafe. The Department of Homeland Security first granted Haitians an 18-month TPS status after the earthquake, and extended it in 2011, and again in October 2012.

As of December 2013, there were 2,637 Haitians living in New Jersey who had gotten TPS approval, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
