By Kyle Balluck
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said President Obama impressed Republican senators by being the smartest man in the room during a series of intimate dinners last year intended to repair relations with Capitol Hill.
But the Arizona lawmaker and Obamas opponent for the White House in 2008 said the presidents outreach efforts are now flagging.
There are some things that he could find that we could do on a bipartisan basis, and that may not be his top agenda items, but hes got to do more outreach, McCain said in an interview published this weekend with Time magazine.
I thought when he had a couple of dinners with Republican senators, we really had a good environment there. Because he is a very very articulate and attractive guy in a setting with eight or nine senators and him. Because he was smarter than the rest of us, he continued. But I dont see that now. I dont see any of that.

(11,362 posts)... and you blew it. The President spent most of his first term trying to find "common ground" with you and your fellow republicans. He gave up because you would "commit" to a position when you spoke with him, only to reverse it when it came time to vote.
As an aside, almost anyone could look smarter than John McCain.

(4,407 posts)I don't want Obama to reach out to them - it's too much like reaching out to a serial killer. Rather than improve Republicans, it just brings Obama down. It's better to say, "Look guys, you're fucking insane. Every time I try to do something that actually helps the country rather than screwing it up worse, you block it, with another filibuster or some other bullshit move. And what do you want to get done? More tax breaks for the rich, less regulation for coal miners? Fuck that! Go back and pout until you decide to do your fucking job!"
With apologies to the rude pundit. I'm not muscling in on your territory.

(17,621 posts)A woman (don't know why I remember it was a woman, but whatever) wrote in to TIME magazine saying that Senator Sam Ervin was the perfect example of why there should be an age at which senators should be forced to retire. McCain is another one.
