Links Between Ukrainian Radicals and North Caucasus Rebels Being Checked, Kadyrov Says

Chechen officials are investigating the possible existence of links between rebels in the restive North Caucasus and the Right Sector, a radical Ukrainian nationalist group, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said.

"If the information is confirmed, our answer will be fair and tough," Kadyrov told Itar-Tass on Monday. "Every one of them will be prosecuted under Russian law."

An unidentified law enforcement official in the North Caucasus said "operational data indicates that Ukrainian nationalists are fighting on the side of extremists and have provided them with financial and other assistance and support regularly over the past 10-12 years."

Earlier it was reported in the Russian media that Dmitry Yarosh, head of Right Sector, had appealed for support from Caucasian militants, urging them to ramp up their efforts against Russia.

Russian investigators have opened a criminal case against the leader of the Ukrainian movement Right Sector, Dmytro Yarosh, under two articles of the Criminal Code, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax.

"The case has been opened under two articles: public calls for extremism and public calls for terrorism," Markin said.

"In his speeches the head of the ultranationalist Ukrainian organization, Right Sector, Dmytro Yarosh publicly urges anti-Russian forces to commit extremist actions and terror on Russian territory," according to investigators.

The Russian Investigative Committee is planning to secure an arrest in absentia of Yarosh. "Very soon the investigators will request the remand into custody of Yarosh, and then Yarosh will be put on the international wanted list," Markin said.

seems to be clearer.

Putin and other Russian officials keep saying that the armed forces occupying Crimea are not Russian soldiers. In that case they should investigate how there folks are getting Russian military vehicles assigned to the North Caucus district hundreds of miles away. Sounds like there is definitely a "link" there.

08:00: The BBC's Abdujalil Abdurasulov, in Crimea says the license plates of some military vehicles in Belbek air base suggest they came from Russia. The zone 21, referenced in the picture, is the North Caucasus military district, our correspondent says. Earlier the BBC saw vehicles marked with zone 90, which is Russia's Black Sea Fleet.
